Yeah that wouldn't be happening if people stopped telling so many toxic lies. If you're worried about people having to face consequences for lies then maybe you should focus on the lies. |
It wasn't "very few" - there were HUGE disparities in vaccination rates, directly correlated with political leanings, and the lies and conspiracy theories driving people away from vaccines found their hotbed in conservative circles. The huge disparity shows those lies were indeed effective with a large number of people. |
Polling shows 70% of Republicans believe the "election was stolen" LIE. It's a LIE. And it was directly responsible for the violence of J6. It was a violent, destructive lie that got people killed. Stop with your LIES that "very few people believe that stuff." Stop pretending that it's all free fair game to tell whatever lies you like no matter the consequences. You are part of the problem. |
So, claiming that the election was stolen or illegitimate is speech that should be censored? Is that what you are saying? |
There was very little actual censoring even going on. The right wing freaked out over fact checks while leaving the content uncensored. Outraged over the lies being called out. However when there is damage, destruction, loss of life caused by a lie, those central to the lie should be held accountable. IMHO Trump, Stone and others should be prosecuted as accessory to murder over J6. |
In the case of the Big Steal lie, J6 happened and people died because of it. I think the main figures who promoted the lie should be punished, should be made to publicly retract their lies and apologize to America for them. There absolutely do need to be consequences. |
So, if someone claims an election is stolen or illegitimate, and others act out because of it, it should be prosecuted. But, if someone claims an election is stolen or illegitimate, and nobody acts on it, it is ok? |
All of this. It was wild to experience in real time. I was trying to get pregnant at the time and posting about the menstrual abnormalities I was experiencing and got shut down nonstop. |
do you think the first amendment only protects “legitimate political viewpoints”? |
and “clear and present danger” is an incredibly narrow category. |
maybe, but the charges were for the people who stormed the capitol. not the speech. |
the government does not have the authority to censor what it deems “lies” on the internet. period. please cite the case law you believe supports that. ps the stolen valor law was overturned. |
The government has the authority to advise a business that there are malign foreign actors flooding their business with lies. And the business has the right to choose to censor those lies. |
The bolded is funny. I remember a certain president (that is currently in office btw) saying that if you get the vaccine you cannot get covid. Has he been jailed for lying about a product? Nope. You know why the covid vaccine is still under EUA for young kids? It hasn't been shown to be effective. But this current administration is pushing for young kids to get it because it "saves lives". Provides no benefit to those U12 kids, so it that lying about a product? I would say yes. But no one has been charged with a crime because of 1A. Also, people lie about products All. The. Time. Ever seen a TV add for a non-FDA supplement? They lie. You know what is also covered? Certain threats that do not incite violence or are a directs threat. Chant "kill the rich!" and you won't be thrown in jail. Remember when people were calling for "burning it all down!" during the 2020 summer of love? They weren't arrested. All covered by 1A. |
Action is the key word here. We are talking about disinformation, which is speech. Them believing the election was stolen is still covered by the 1A. Same when democrats claim that the supreme court is "illegitimate" It is a lie, disinformation for sure, but people are allowed to voice their opinions free from government interference . |
