Not sure the person they picked is the best person to lead it but in principle it is an excellent idea to try to better monitor and contain online misinformation. It is not Orwellian to seek to protect ourselves from the onslaught of false information that plagues us and other Western countries. Orwellian would be creating propaganda to steer people towards voting for authoritarian dictators and not to protecting information flows so that people can vote according to more rational preferences.

Mayorkas appeared before the House Appropriations Subcommittee to discuss the fiscal 2023 budget for the Department of Homeland Security. Rep. | I guess most commercial ads will be banned now, and campaign claims of incumbent opponents. Putin is winning and our govies don’t even know it. |

| The amount of foreign misinformation during the last campaign was crazy. I worked for the Senate and we tracked a lot of it. After work, I would get on FB and see people I knew sharing the same misinformation posts I saw at work. It was insane. I ended up closing out most of my social media accounts. This is definitely needed but it needs to be handled by career people not political people. |

How about the comments that “The border is being managed effectively.” That’s disinformation right there. Or will this board police only viewports that go against the official govt position. I don’t think many people feel the border is being managed well at all, but Biden/Myorkas keep saying that all is good there!!! Bull. |

| I look forward to the discussion regarding the authorizing statue, the particular people such an entity is being designed for, the staff selection etc. Lots of huge issues that should be explored before this is up and running. |

Exactly. Democrats consider “disinformation” anything that exposes their narrative as a lie. Mayorkas/Biden/Harris are absolutely peddling disinformation with the lie that the border has - in any way - been effectively managed by their administration. |
