He’d been staying in his gal pal’s Canarsie apartment since Sunday — but wasn’t concerned about getting caught until he was named as a suspect Wednesday night, a law enforcement source said.

Wint was “shocked” by the warrant for his arrest, the source added. He called his parents in Maryland, then hopped in a livery cab, forking over hundreds of dollars to get back to DC, the source said.

His parents got in touch with authorities, telling them he’d been staying with the paramour in Brooklyn. Marshals in New York City went to his girlfriend’s Canarsie pad, but missed him by a few hours, the source said.

“We tracked him up to New York City and barely missed him [Wednesday] night,” Robert Fernandez, commander of the US Marshals Services’ Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, said Friday morning, CNN reported.

They tracked the gal pal down Thursday at the Jamaican restaurant where she works and brought her in for questioning at the 69th Precinct.
The woman, who was in possession of Wint’s phone, had told cops he spent Wednesday night with her before heading back to DC, law enforcement sources said.

I dont think I understand...
He told gf he is going back to DC and she told the authorities?
He told his parents he is heading back to DC and they called authorities disclosing he was in NYC and heading back to DC?

Did he want to get caught or what? Why did he even come back to DC? The reason I ask is that these moves seem to be dumb and crazy, with no reason or logic which probably tells us what kind of a person he is.

His parents turned him in.

I wonder if they will try to collect the reward money.

They were probably cooperating with the police, not seeking financial gain.

I bet he came back to DC because he was scared to be in jail in New York.

The suspect, Daron Wint, 34, of Lanham, Maryland, has been charged with first-degree murder while armed. He will be arraigned some time after 3 p.m. EDT in District of Columbia Superior Court, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Too bad the prosecutors can't get this into federal court.

They can. We'll see if they do.

The "gal pal" committed a crime by harboring a wanted murderer. She should be prosecuted.

She could easily say she didn't know. What time was his warrent made public Wednesday night? I didn't know until yesterday morning. Before this entire incident I would have thought no one would protect such a person. Maybe she did know what he did on Sunday. If there is proof (texts, whatever) she's done. They aren't going to take it easy on anyone and this investigation has been so thorough.

Getting back to the topic at hand, it appears that 5 people -- three females and two males -- were taken into custody with Wint. The police won't say anything about them other than they haven't been charged. The police have also said that Wint wasn't armed when he was taken into custody (and I've heard nothing about the others being armed). So, does anyone think this suggests that he may have in fact been heading into DC to turn himself in? He may have wanted witnesses so to avoid be summarily executed and thought women were less threatening then men.

My sources for all of the information, but not the supposition, are tweets from local reporters.

No way. Then they should have just pulled over when the police started following them.

Possibly that is true. But often knowing homeowner has or may have gun is a deterrent in itself. The more obstacles criminals have to avoid the better. I personally don't believe you would have all those home burglaries people were mentioning if guns were legal. The criminals are so brazen because who is going to stop them? They're the only ones with the guns.

This is something of a fantasy. I know an ER doctor and gun collector who was tied up in his house with his housekeeper, and watched as his guns were stolen. He didn't defend himself with them, and he's lucky he wasn't killed with them.

It just seems like deciding to turn yourself in isn't the mentality of someone who would do this crime in the first place, kwim?

If we wanted to turn himself in, why not simply do so in NY? Makes little sense to run a number of risks coming back here.

It certainly doesn't seem like he had a good plan for going into hiding. It would have been relatively easy to hop on a plane out of New York and go to Mexico or the Caribbean and lay low.

They didn't know the police were following them. Once the police stopped them, there was no resistance.

He knew the police were looking for him. If you were traveling in an entourage that inexplicably included a large box truck, wouldn't you be in the back of the truck where no one could see you?

Agreed. We have a gun locked in a safe. I don't even know how to get it out.

My DH is under the allusion he'd always have time to get to it and load it,, etc. But- he also thinks he can overpower any intruder with any weapon on physical strength alone.

I read "after a short chase" he gave up. Anyway, he could have turned himself in in NY.
