If they didn't look into the league they were agreeing to play in then it was their fault. The website is easy to find, as well as the member clubs and schedules. But, when you see that "Beach FC" is in your league it might stand to reason that you may in fact play against that club. I have not posted anything "pro CCL". I have ALWAYS AND FOREVER stated that there are lots of choices, chose the option that works best for you. I'm not pro any league or club and I'm not ragging on any league or club. Everyone has different needs for their kids and lifestyle, simply chose what will work for you. Finding what will work is easier than expecting leagues or clubs to change for you. If enough people vote with their feet then YES, leagues will adapt to keep their place in the market. But staying in some league while bashing it on a forum does not bring change. Leaving and letting it know why you are leaving will lead to the change. |
This topic about CCL travel distance is getting stale. I'm not a CCL parent and I'm ok with it. People make their own choices and are free to do so. Go somewhere else next year if you are not happy. Let's talk about the impact of this new announcement and its benefits and disadvantages. |

I just find it curious that CCL fans are now congratulating CCL for addressing a problem (too much travel) that they insist we should never have discussed.
I really don't care. I just find it fascinating human behavior. And I *am* curious to see how they'll implement it and the knock-on effects it'll have in Northern Virginia. Will NCSL barely field any teams through U12? Will ODSL be reduced to Cougars vs. Dynamite? Will EDP's efforts to limit travel by recruiting more DMV clubs be doomed? There's a lot to discuss here. If you don't like it, well, there are millions of other message board threads ... |
Some clubs may simply want to try it to see how it fits. It is also logistically a good idea considering the number of teams at the U9-U12 level. And the extra local teams will likely maintain the number that they are losing by not traveling to Richmond etc. So we are likely looking at 4-5 clubs that are far more local? It reads to me more like CCL is simply trying to provide the same number of opponents without the travel. Who knows, it could lead to expansion that requires separate divisions but it certainly feels like a beta solution for a current problem with possible potential for league expansion down the road. |
If you think the message board led to the change you are fooling yourself. People leaving the league, or clubs reporting complaints from parents led to the change. Basically, vote with your feet and wallet if you want change. If enough people choose what is right for them leagues will react. |
Very curious to see what happens with the local scene. I know it has been mentioned before but NCSL/ODSL (maybe merge and come up with something unique) really need to do something to stay relevant and keep up with CCL/EDP. |
It could lead to an expanded CCLII in the DC-metro area that allows these clubs to continue with the league rather than jump back into NCSL/ODSL. That may only work if CCL requires clubs to fill the entire U9-U12 ages and not just have individual teams in the new league. |
Expanding CCL II makes more sense, but it has to be for a very good reason to square off against NCSL. With CCL, VPL and EDP taking a bulk of the local A teams for clubs to participate in CCL II only removes any real reason when you cant offer the carrot of a club pass to the Clubs A team in season. Or, you are the clubs A team in a "B league" with far less competition than what NCSL would offer at that level. I guess I don't see the point of CCL II for non-CCL clubs. |
Why are you so convinced people aren't doing both? Why are you so convinced everyone who raises questions about CCL is a current CCL parent, not a former CCL parent or someone who declined to be in CCL? And why would it be so bad for current CCL parents who are pondering their future decisions to ask if CCL is going to address a few things, for better or for worse? What if a current CCL parent says, "Hey, I don't want my U9s to be playing inferior competition just to have shorter travel times." Is that a legitimate concern, or should that parent just "vote with his feet" before we even know how CCL is going to look next year? |
| I'm sure they wouldn't have come up with this without the commitment of some of these non-CCL clubs already and now just looking for a few extras. |
Beware - NextGenUSA may be the biggest scam going from what I've heard. Apparently the free training is just a loss leader, and they make up for it on the European trips by charging $3K per head and bloating the rosters. I heard someone say they take 14 kids to Europe to play 7v7. I called BS at first but youtube doesn't lie: 7v7 with 7 kids sitting on the bench. At U12. In Spain, playing (or watching) a team from Denver. Crazy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaCBH4eOXwg |
I don't know anything about this particular program, but I'm not sure why you'd call it a scam based on the evidence above. No one is forcing families to pay $3k to go on a trip to Europe, correct? If you have to sign something saying we will only allow you to participate in free training if you agree to go on the Europe trips, that would be different. But if you can get good training for free, then skip the trip, sounds like a pretty good deal. My son participated in something that sounds similar to the NextGen set-up a few years back. That did have a somewhat underhanded element, in that the guy who ran it seemed to be using free training in part to recruit kids to the club/team that he managed--it was supposed to just be "club-neutral" extra training for top players. But the training was very good, and we didn't have any intention of leaving our club so it was all just a bonus for us. |
| Is it just a coincidence that the new CCL initiative and this training group near Baltimore are both called Next Gen? Seems like the training group would find that annoying (or worse, if they've trademarked it) if they are not affiliated. |
Hello in there ---our Age group has teams that play in CCL, CCL2, NCSL and ODSL (6 teams). You pick a club and it isn't until way after tryouts that you actually know which coach you'll have or the league your child will be playing in. Even when you do your research---sometimes you find out the important logistics after the fact and have to wait an entire year to make the appropriate changes. Then--you get the schedule and say Holy F*ck--I didn't know we had to drive to VA Beach for a regular season game.
