There are definitely some "please don't move us from Oakton to the Western high school" comments that were not removed from what's on the website. |
Check other regions. There are comments about this new high school topic in both region 4 & 6. The comments are everywhere, especially if you did not use the boundary tool correctly. There is also a tab for comments with no regions at the bottom. It might be there. |
| Tons of comments regarding fixing Lewis HS - more than I expected. I wonder if the SB will finally wake up and do something. |
If they offer a better experience, fewer families will flee the school. It ain’t rocket science. |
What’s the issue with Gunston Elementary? |
FCPS needs to dump IB from all schools but Robinson. |
Hagel Circle. It is a very poor housing complex that has been moved around from school to school, because none of the wealthier areas want the public housing complex. FCPS finally settled on putting them into Halley a decade plus ago, a far away neighborhood on the other side of 95, around 4 elementary schools away from Hagel Circle. From the map 1-3 comments, it sounds like one early version of the map put them at Lorton Station, which is located like a block away from Hagel Circle. That went over like a lead balloon, so in map 4 FCPS moved Hagel Circle to the next closest elementary school, Gunston, which will put them over capacity and overload their septic system. Gunston does not want the poor kids from Hagel Circle either. Right now, they are bussed so far out of their neighborhood to go to their elementary school, which affects their achievement, attendance and any possible parent involvement. It is basically the equivalent of bussing a Vienna elementary school past the beltway to Annandale... not one parent of any group but the poorest among us would stand for this if it were our own kids. There are a ton of posts going back and forth from parents in those potential receiving schools of all the reasons why Hagel Circle should remain at far away Halley and not get rezoned to one of their neighborhood schools. For one of the bluest areas of Fairfax County, the hypocrisy is astounding. |
| OMG Oakton moms went in and posted their comments on every single region's page. They are out of control. |
I am not familiar with that area. However, if any kids need to live close to the school it is the poor kids. I was a Title I teacher in an extremely poor school Some of the kids were bused in from a project a little further away. While the kids who lived nearby were also relatively poor, it was a whole lot easier getting parents in for conferences if they could walk. The parents who could not walk were much more difficult to get to the school for conferences. Also, if a child misses the bus--well, there goes a day of school. Priority should be given to the commute--especially for poorer students. |
They state above the comments that these were from Oct 13-Oct 28th. There will be another BRAC meeting to review the additional comments. I assume commenting will end at midnight. |
|
I wonder what the comments would change. It's obvious to anyone reading them with a critical eye that there are a lot of "false flag" posts where, for example, someone will come on and say they strongly support Boundary Change X because in reality they actually just really oppose Boundary Change Y.
Neither BRAC members nor anyone else have any way to verify the bona fides of those leaving comments. |
The School Board is supposed to make these decisions on what is best for the system. It is not best for the system to be sending kids long distances to full schools when there are schools nearby with seats. |
Consistency in pyramid is best, so you’re not right. |
Once a move happens, the new school can remain consistent for all students going forward. That’s a stupid argument to justify staying at a school that is far away and you know it. Arguing to stay at a further away school is actually a great way to threaten the stability. If you listen to the most recent school board meeting, they talked about the boundary review process being iterative and how they’re not going to solve every problem in this first round. Which means they’re going to keep looking at things and tweaking them down the road. Might as well move to a closer school now, and reduce the likelihood of being moved in the future. Grandfather in the kids for whom stability is important, and be done with it. |
| Hagel Circle is definitely out of Halley. They already want to start a Korean language immersion program there to fill the empty capacity (meanwhile, the entire South County pyramid doesn’t have an in pyramid AAP center and Silverbrook, which is located in the literal same physical neighborhood as Halley, is consistently bursting at the seams with high enrollment … but I digress …) The only question is what elementary school it ends up at. Sending it to Lorton Station kicks it out of South County entirely and makes an already Title 1 elementary even higher poverty and likely quite crowded, although it is a newer building that can more easily accommodate more students. Sending it to Gunston necessitates a lot of moves out of Gunston to Island Creek, which is not an easy drive through some busy intersections, and still puts Gunston very close to capacity, in an older building that doesn’t have public sewer, and may turn the school Title 1 as well. |
