Bridgerton: new Netflix series

I will say that I did love the music. They took some contemporary hits and made remade them into lovely classical tunes.

Otherwise, I hated it.

I don’t think it’s a big deal when somebody doesn’t like it but I call them on it if it’s a bad reason. Like if somebody likes Hamilton but thinks bridgerton should have had cast people of color as dukes and queens, or when they don’t like it because it’s predictable but they like other predictable shows, like maybe Sherlock or pride and prejudice, or they dont like it because of the lack of historical accuracy, not recognizing that it is a creative decision rather than a lapse in judgment.

I was an English major and I like dissecting stuff like this. My husband doesn’t like the show and I don’t think his reasons for not liking it are great, I don’t hold it against him or make him watch it or anything.

So you’re the poster who challenges anyone who says they don’t like this show, by insisting their reasons are “wrong”? You do realize, no one has to justify their opinions to you, right? We can dislike it for any reason at all. So funny that you think otherwise.

Also - you were an *English* major??

I don’t understand your last paragraph and why you think my being an English major is funny, but yes, I was, and it was lovely.

A lot of posters are challenging people who dislike the show and their reasons for it. Of course somebody can dislike something for any reason, but I can also say that reason isn’t good. Like if somebody doesn’t like game of thrones because it’s historically inaccurate (yes I have heard that), I can point out that it’s fantasy. And they are still free to dislike it.

The point is that you are in no position to tell anyone that their reasons are “wrong.” Maybe it is you who is wrong? Just a thought.

And the comment about your major was in reaction to your writing. I’ll leave it at that.

Dp. It’s a trending show. Top 5 for Netflix original this year. Season 2 is already being discussed. It’s popularity is everywhere at this point. Seems like your opinion is in the minority and might be wrong. Just a thought.

So minority opinions are wrong? Do you even hear yourself?

I have a love-hate relationship with this show. The storyline is fun but I got really confused during the first 15 mins because I did not expect it to be in an alternte reality. When I saw the costumes in the beginning, I thought, oh ok, it’s Jane austen era, but then, as the story goes, I realize it’s not your typical period piece. The only casting that I liked is the duke and the opera singer. The queen is horrible and I wonder if she was added there to poke fun at the idea of royalty. Dapne is so plain, it wiyld not be an issue if she was not depicted as someone who’s supposed to be gorgeous, ditto with Marina.

It’s perfectly fine to say you don’t like the show. It is questionable to say you don’t like it because people of color as the royalty and nobility is historically inaccurate since everyone now knows that it was not meant to be historically accurate. It’s like saying you dislike Star Trek because it didn’t realistically portray space flight.

I loved the queen. She was hilarious. Marina was pretty and her hair was beautiful.

The Vitamin String Quartet has been around for about 20 years, and their stuff is great.

DP. I loved the queen too. She played the role deliciously and pitch perfectly.

Disagree on Marina. Her hair may be beautiful, but she lacked charm from get go.

That didn't bother me. I just found it really inconsistent in terms of historical accuracy. It seemed to pick and choose among cultural conventions of the time without much rhyme or reason -- just whatever they needed for the story to happen a certain way, whether or not it was inconsistent with things that happened elsewhere. I don't mind alternative history at all--it can be really interesting and fun--but the world ought to be internally consistent.

Also, Daphne and Simon displaying their portrait at the ball, like it was the gift table at a wedding, was ridiculous.

That did not bother me after I realized it was meant to be an alternate reality, my issue is more on the casting, notbthat they all need no be white, but at least match what they are supposed to be portraying. I find it so ridiculous when everyone thought Marina and Daphe were exceptionally beautiful. They are besutiful but not exceptionally beautiful as they seem to be portraying.

Do you have to be charming in order to be pretty?

I like watching historical productions for their accuracy. Because I'm a history geek. For me, the pleasure is bringing the past alive in an accurate way.

I know Bridgerton isn't historically accurate and isn't intended to be accurate (and the color blind casting is part of it), so that's why I'm not going to watch it. Just like I wouldn't watch a show about the Zulus or the Chinese court that had colorblind casting, because it wouldn't be a serious attempt at a historical production, just fantasy. And I'm not into fantasy.

That is fine, by the way. There's a place for fantasy and a place for historical accuracy. But I wouldn't judge people for not liking Bridgerton because it isn't historically accurate.

So this means you don’t watch any fantasy? Star Trek? Game of Thrones? Star Wars?
