It seemed to pick and choose among cultural conventions of the time without much rhyme or reason -- just whatever they needed for the story to happen a certain way, whether or not it was inconsistent with things that happened elsewhere. I don't mind alternative history at all--it can be really interesting and fun--but the world ought to be internally consistent. Also, Daphne and Simon displaying their portrait at the ball, like it was the gift table at a wedding, was ridiculous. [/quote]
