It made no sense that Marina would have the number of suitors that she had. She had a pretty face, but her attitude was always sullen and flat. Women of that class would have been expected to be polite, to be able to make conversation, to be charming. Plus, she was not from an important or high-ranking family, and we saw no indication that she came from a lot of money or had a big dowry. She would have a few suitors because she was pretty, but she would not have been so sought after without rank, money, or social grace. |
| Marina was the only miscast character in my opinion. I loved that she was savvy and experienced but the actress was wrong. |
None of those productions are 100% accurate. Some aren’t even 50% accurate. I have a masters degree in history. |
| I’m just starting the series. Did anyone recognize Thank U next by Ariana grande at Lady Danburys ball? |
Yes! I thought that was great song choice. So cheeky! |
I think Marina was totally miscast. She is pretty but not gorgeous they way I would expect. I also think Daphne was not attractive enough to land the Duke. She looked like a tween. It was off putting. I also didn’t realize she was the actress in Younger who has a kid with Josh. She looked prettier in that show but she is not cute enough to land the Duke and Josh. They are both so hot. |
I only know because I watch with closed captioning. All the music is a modern song I believe. |
And what is your point? I just watched the 1996 production of Pride and Prejudice. It's pretty accurate. Faithful to the story and captures finely the mannerism and standards of the Regency period as well as its hypocrites. A colorblind production wouldn't be accurate. It'd be something quite different. Historical productions span the range from very accurate to very inaccurate. The difference is sincerity. It comes down to what the intent is. |
This is fantasy. You can't apply real Regency standards and attitudes to it. The show writers and producers aren't going for an accurate production, but playful romance fiction. Read Austen if you want something more real. |
Meh. People can like or dislike shows for any reason they choose. Whether you find it “questionable” or not is irrelevant. |
+1 I enjoyed the queen but found Marina utterly charmless. |
DP. Yes. |
God, you’re annoying. DP |

If we lived in a time where race was not relevant, colorblind casting would always make complete sense, even in productions (unlike Bridgerton) that were trying to accurately convey a historical time and place that was not actually very diverse. To colorblind people, the race of characters would barely be noticeable.
But race is the number one or two preoccupation right now of Americans, whether in regard to BLM or white supremacy or reparations or Latin American refugee issues. And we are also urged by our leaders to focus on issues of race when considering current injustices as well as the history of our nation! So it seems a little odd to me that some people in this thread think it’s weird that viewers notice race! Of course they do. I think it’s value-neutral, in a time when we have learned that saying you’re colorblind is a) untrue and b) indicative of your racial privilege. |
That’s fine. Questioning bullsh*t can annoy sh*tty people. |
