My real estate taxes just assessed 6% higher. My home will not sell for more though. 70% of FfX county taxes go to schools and Health & Human services. Yes I pay. Dearly

And you benefit greatly. A new generation of educated Americans is the engine for economic growth.

Such BS. Let’s bring in that “new generation” legally. We have laws. Let’s enforce them.

We have TO S of people in our own country who need to be educated. Like the entire state of Oklahoma or Baltimore, say.

The only reason we ‘like’ immigrants is because we can force them to do labor in terrible conditions at very low rates of pay. Companies like to import slaves and then cry that they ‘have to because these are the only people who will do the work!’ And yet if the companies paid a fair wage Americans would go those jobs.

This isn’t ‘Jesus, Mary and Joseph’ - they would be turned away as they’re not from the right country. It’s not to ‘educate’ them - especially if their parents are working 2 jobs to survive & they’re never home- it’s for Americans to have cheap produce, meat & other goods and household help. With their low wages it’s the low and middle income Americans who are stressed with the higher taxes needed to pay for their schooling and social services (lawyers, healthcare, food stamps). But the rich just keep getting richer - both the corporations & the citizens that use their labor.

We should be selecting a wide variety of immigrants and we should be treating them fairly with decent wages, working conditions and opportunities.

Trump's policies have raised rates for migrant workers. Wages are discussed at 3:30 in the episode. Pay went from $8.70/hr to $21/hr for farm workers.
https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2018/04/25/605819103/the-farm-labor-drought

Trump raising wages will attract more migrates, which will increase the fear mongering and threat levels of his base to get them out to vote. Brilliant politics! You’re being played anti-immigrant folks.

The economy is good and fewer people want to come here now because of Trump. Wages might entice some people to try to cross but a lot of people probably just won't bother.

More likely - Trump is determined to enforce our laws and protect our borders better than and Democratic candidate will do.
THAT, my dear, is what will attract his base (and others who are tired of illegal immigration).

Why are you tired of illegal immigration? How has it impacted you personally?

My family has many blue-collar workers and it has negatively impacted them and their trades. Thank God some trades require licensure or they'd be even more negatively impacted than they already have been.

How so? Which trades?

Roofing is a huge one. My FIL, his brothers, and my BIL are or were roofers. Their industry in this area is inundated with people who are admittedly illegal immigrants. FIL worked for a company and you can guess how it affected his pay and benefits. BIL had a small roofing company and you can guess how it is to compete for work. They're competing with people who work hard, but aren't as skilled (language barriers, experience, etc.) and are happy not to make as much money as the market paid in the past, have benefits, or complain about worksite safety. If you think it isn't a problem, you're deluding yourself.

How would you know if the competition hired illegals? Just because someone speaks Spanish doesn’t mean they are here illegally. How do you know the immigration status of every Spanish speaker on the job?

Aren’t the roofing and trades dealing with the fallout of the housing crisis? Has housing construction returned to pre-collapse levels?

And republicans like the Koch brothers hire the cheaper labor to do construction and home building.

Why? Because the GOP propaganda machine pumps out misinformation about unauthorized immigrants 24x7 - misinformation that fuels the fear and anger of their gullible conservative base. Conveniently distracting them from their rape of the middle & working classes.

Wow. Just wow. I guess the statistic of 11 million illegal aliens in this country is a “made-up GOP statistic?” I guess the murder of Kate Steinle, Ronald deSilva, Drew Rosenberg, and countless others is just “misinformation?” I guess the numerous images of illegal aliens scaling our walls are simply “propaganda?"
Why do we care so much? For one, we have laws. Laws that are being ignored by the illegal aliens entering this country. Laws being ignored by the Democrats welcoming them in. And, laws being ignored by the Democratic politicians giving them sanctuary.
I care because our fiscal resources are limited. Every illegal alien who enters our country diverts resources from citizens who live here - in schools, in hospitals, and yes, in federal funding (these illegal alien children are eligible for free lunches AND a free education - almost always at a cost higher than that of citizens).
I care because some of these entering illegally are coming to do harm to our citizens. Some are gang members who have actually murdered and raped others. Some are drug runners who flood our country with illegal drugs.
So, yeah, I care. Illegal immigration lowers the quality of life for many here.
The question is why do you NOT care? Why do you NOT care about our laws and the well-being and safety of our citizens? What other laws do you believe are “optional?”

Out of curiosity, were you this concerned about laws the Bundys broke? What about Arpaio?

Do you always participate in whataboutism? Do you always have difficulty staying on topic?

No problem staying on topic. Answer the question. You said you care about our laws. So do I. I am wondering if you are as preoccupied with law-breaking of the Bundy's, for example. Or Arpaio. Or is this more about brown people breaking the law. It's pertinent to the conversation because so much of the propaganda of the Trump administration and their supporters is thinly veiled racism. The "caravan frenzy" is the latest example. I'm curious if you're as passionate about whites breaking our laws.

So answer the question.

Start a new thread. We are talking about illegal immigration here. The Bundys have nothing to do with that.

Stop being dense. The reasons I bring this up is that so many anti-immigration nonsense in this thread is based in supposed "rule of law" ... but only, it seems, when it pertains to brown people. I'll let your deflection stand as a response. Think we both know it's not the law you're so worried about.

But but but...the GOP propaganda machine says that “illegals” are responsible for TONS of crimes. Why would PP care about FACTS when he hears what he wants from FoxNews?

It doesn’t matter to him that the rate of crime for undocumented immigrants is LOWER than it is for people born in US. Because to him it FEELS like they should be more violent. So if FoxNews hints at that then he eats it up. Fuels that fear and anger big time.

Personally, I'm more fearful of angry white men, who are statistically more likely to rape and/or murder me. Something should be done about these violent offenders...

Here’s the thing you won’t admit. We have hundreds, if not thousands, of Americans who have lost their lives or loved ones because of crimes of illegal aliens. Others have been victims of rape or robbery. The simple fact you won’t admit - THESE CRIMES WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED IF THESE PEOPLE WEREN’T HERE LIKE THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN.
A friend of our family was killed by an illegal alien driving drunk. He was a great guy with a promising future. The illegal alien got 3 years. Pitiful.
I don’t care WHAT the crime rate is. Anything over ZERO is too high. We have enough crime in this country from citizens. Why the hell do we need to import more?
And, BTW - I don’t care what color their skin is. White, yellow, black, brown, pink, purple..... I care if they are in our country illegally. Period.

Why? Why is this particular issue SO important to you that you'd put a lunatic like Trump into office? To punish that drunk driver? If you're so worried about another family friend getting hit by a drunk driver then why aren't you out pushing for drunk driving checkpoints - or other measures that would actually cut down on drunk-driving related deaths? Is the cost of eliminating that 0.00001% chance that it's another illegal alien really worth it to you?

I answered your question (as have many others) if you bother to read the posts. I underlined my response above.
Why are you so against enforcing our borders and allowing illegal aliens into our country?

You really need to calm down. I wouldn't pretend to know anyone's immigration status and wouldn't assume from the language they speak. What you missed from my post above is that the people my FIL and BIL work with openly SAY that they are illegal immigrants.

BIL and FIL have been roofers for years and years; through many economic down-turns, and know the difference between that and the erosion of their pay and benefits from the wave of illegal immigrants who've taken many roofing jobs. Also, they don't work exclusively on homes, and many of the homes they do work on, are in very high income areas (FIL was a slate roofer), so the housing crisit wasn't so much an issue.

I'm not sure why it's so necessary for you to try to say that there's got to be some other explanation for their experience. Certainly, there may be other forces at work, but illegal immigration has played a part in eroding the pay, benefits, and ability to compete in the roofing industry.

NP.. those illegal immigrants are doing what businesses in the US allow them to do.. work. Don't blame them for taking advantage of what those businesses are offering. Lay your blame on where it belongs - businesses (many R owned) who hire them. If these businesses stopped hiring them, guess what would happen? They'd stop coming. No jobs, no reason to come.

But those businesses love their cheap labor. For example, in FL, they just voted down a measure to implement e-verify. Guess who lobbied against it? Construction and Ag. lobbies and FL chamber of commerce - -most who are Rs.

You'll need to stop with your assumptions. I didn't blame them, I blamed illegal immigration, which has many facets. PP asked how illegal immigration personally affected me or my family, which I answered. I fully support working from the illegal immigration problem from all the angles, including from the business side. My idea is a fine of treble the yearly market wages and applicable taxes (SS, unemployment, etc.) for each illegal immigrant worker a company hires. The company my FIL worked for took SS #s from its workers and made no effort to know if the SS #s actually belonged to the workers. If one SS# didn't "work" some reason, they'd just give a different one.

Do you live in the DC metro area? Lets start with the nosedive in public schools of places with many illegal immigrants and their offspring live. attendance rates drop, graduation rates drop, reading proficiency drops, resources drained. that effects our children
Gangs
trashing neighborhoods, living 20 to a house in violation of safety codes, noise violations

All of those things have impacted you personally?

Our school, yes.
Without going into too much detail, the gangs are a problem in the entire DC metro area
We dont have issues in overcrowded houses in our specific neighborhood but my dad lived in Woodbridge and it was a huge problem ... until Prince William County started to crack down on the housing violations. I think they all moved to Montgomery County at that point... and you can see what happened to the schools there.

I mean how long do you believe we should wait until these things effect us personally?! By then its too late! And all these far left liberals who advocate for open borders probably send their kids to Sidwell Friends and live in gated neighborhoods where none of the after effects will touch them or their lives (unless the illegal immigrants are cleaning their homes or mowing their lawns of course!)

Agree. Both illegal immigrants need to be deported and the businesses who knowingly hire them should be fined/jailed. Go after the tax evasion angle for employers - those who pay under the table and know full well these people arent here legally.

Is it the thought that somewhere in America a family without the proper paperwork and time in bureaucratic limbo might be having a happier and higher quality of life? Does that keep you awake at night? That someone might be getting something for free? Why doesn’t it bother you that rich Americans get unearned benefits at your expense? Your economic unease is due to money grubbing top .01% of Americans, not Hispanics fleeing countries torn apart by America’s insatiable appetite for illegal narcotics.

Do you live in the DC metro area? Lets start with the nosedive in public schools of places with many illegal immigrants and their offspring live. attendance rates drop, graduation rates drop, reading proficiency drops, resources drained. that effects our children
Gangs
trashing neighborhoods, living 20 to a house in violation of safety codes, noise violations

Yeah - well, the embassy of El Salvador is in MoCo & Roger Berliner created a sanctuary city without discussing it with the residents at all:

http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/berliner/

On Monday, January 30, 2017, my colleagues and I, with County Executive Leggett, released a statement reaffirming the core values of Montgomery County: we are a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community. The President's Executive Orders will not change how we interact with our residents. The Montgomery County Police Department does not enforce federal immigration law, and does not inquire about the immigration status of anyone stopped or arrested. We firmly stand for the "Montgomery County Way," and will not tolerate hate or discrimination in our community.

People like the far left open borders PITA questioner drive me crazy. They are as immune to logic as the RWNJ Trump supporters. I'm convinced that a large part of why Trump is in office right now is because of his position on illegal immigration. Even moderate Democrats like me are fed up with the flood of illegal immigrants and the associated drain on services and degradation of the school system. It is not unreasonable or racist to expect that immigration be subject to a reasonable, orderly process. I can't really blame the immigrants; they wouldn't be here unless our businesses offered them employment and our laws provided what might be considered extravagant social services. Democrats should be able to easily win the Presidency in 2020, but we won't if we refuse to effectively address illegal immigration.
