Cybil Shepard's character on Moonlighting was Maddie Hayes. Lots of girls watched that show and thought that Maddie was a cool name. There was a boom in the name Madeline (Maddie) that coincides when with these girls became women and started procreating. My niece is a Maddie and my brother actually regrets the name. He said there is nothing like being out at the soccer field, calling her name, and having 10 little girls turn their heads. |
And don't forgot the millions of little girls named Madison after the mermaid in Splash, most of whom have the nickname Maddie... |
| Shepherd. Can't for the life of me figure out why this became popular. And Seinfeld names a kid this? Shepherd Seinfeld? That hardly passes the laugh test. |
| Most of these names are fantastic as long as you are attractive. Hottest guy I ever dated was a Jamie. But if you're challanged in the sex-appeal area, tons of these names are daggars. |
Ha ha - so true. The stripper names (Desiree, Brandi,Monique) are terrible on their own, but become a cruel joke if the girl is homely. |
| I hate the name Henry. I hate that I hate it, since my cousin and best friend both named their sons Henry. I don't get it. It was awful 80 years ago, and it's awful now. And "Hank" is no better. Sorry, I know I will offend a lot of people since it's so popular. It is a terrible name. I picture some 80 year old man with ear hair and food dribbled on his chin asking you to speak up. |

Holden and Mason for boys.
Girls: Camryn Camdyn or Camden or however someone chooses to spell it (am I the only one who thinks of a city in NJ?) Rylee or Ryleigh or Rilee or Reilly etc |
| Wow this is such a mean post. As a new mom with admittedly raging hormones, I am nearly in tears that we have picked such a horrible name for my son. Thanks ladies for being so nasty! |
| Relax new mom. If there is anything you can take away from this thread it is that there is no name that everyone will universally love or universally despise. The important thing is that you (and spouse) selected a name that you both love and believe suits your dear baby. There are many lovely names that people have posted on this thread. |
| Hazel probably grew more popular after Julia Roberts named one of her twins Hazel. |
Really?! It's mean to voice dislikes regarding an incredibly subjective thing on an anonymous forum? Are we not allowed to dislike certain names? Do you like every name under the sun? Did you really truly think that every single person you encounter would love the name you picked for your son? Grow up, and, please, lighten up. No need for tears. |
Dying to know his name now. FWIW I like a bunch of the names on this thread. At the beginning someone posted they hate Emily - how benign is that? |
| 12:34 here; DS is of the -aden variety. I new it was gaining popularity but I had no idea that so many people hated these names! Seriously all new info here and I am little sensitive about it.... |
| Buck up, 12:34... my DS' name was in the very first post. You can't please everyone. |
Everyone is entitled to liking/disliking any name. Doesn't mean they would dislike your kid based on his/her name. Some of the disliked names are just disliked because of over use, they aren't necessarily ugly names
