Taylor's Feb. Rec for Woodward Boundary Study

Okay, now that WJ/Woodward families have their own thread to talk about this, can we make some space to hear about how Silver Spring families feel about these proposed boundaries?

I'm pretty happy with it for us and our schools, and I think a lot of other neighborhoods around here are happy with it too, but I would not be surprised if Woodlin families are pissed about it (are they?). Anyone else want to share how they're feeling/what they're hearing?

We are zoned for Oakland Terrace ES. Happy that no split articulation is planned and that our middle and high school will stay the same. More concerned about the dissolution of the DCC, mainly because the regional model is going to be a disaster for several years.

I don't think anyone really cares except for the Woodward families.

Einstein doesn't have a lot of course offerings, especially stem and when this happens, there will be a reduction in students, which means a reduction in teachers and not sure what more they can take away in terms of course offerings.

Most families are used to the DCC and the lottery system. Not happy about the DCC being disolved as some of the DCC schools are not strong on academics.

I'm in East silver spring ES and am generally happy. The only option I was really unhappy with for us was the one that split our tiny elementary school. I think option B was what the PTA was recommending. I am unhappy about the loss of the DCC but since we're zoned to Blair it affects us the least.

I agree that I would be much less happy if I were woodlin.

Einstein has more course offerings than many other high schools.

Thanks, MCPS. "Your child will be fine."

I don't work for MCPS and I don't think kids will be "fine" given so many are graduating not proficient and reading. However, that is not because Einstein doesn't offer enough courses, they offer more courses than many other high schools. That is a verifiable fact.

I don’t mind the boundaries but I would like to see Northwood and Einstein get stronger magnets. We attend SCES for French and will go to a different high school. I think we would be very inclined to go to Northwood with many immersion peers but I don’t see much worth applying to.

There is a poster who frequently complains that Einstein doesn’t have multivariable calculus and has IB sciences instead of AP sciences. It is a niche concern.

They did add an engineering magnet to Northwood which does help with its course offerings. Though I don't know that they really have any details about it yet so who knows if it will be any good.

They offer very few classes, and the ones in the course guide aren't all offered; it's all for show. Many of us have tried to fight for the classes and been told no, and the principal refuses to allocate funding. We are told to go to MC, but MC has several requirements and prerequisites, so you can't take some classes because you don't have the prerequisites. You need to look at the actual classes. They may offer a lot of classes due to the numbers but there are few advanced classes. They don't have any science AP's, they don't have any advanced math after Calc BC, only two basic engineering classes taught at the same time/period, only a few CS classes, etc. Its quality over quantity. This is why the DCC is important so kids can lottery into Blair or Wheaton.

IB isn't equal to AP and its not a niche concern.

This would be perfect to add engineering to Northwood.
