| agreed with others, duke undergrad is highly overrated. people go there due to the basketball team. now that coach k is gone, we’ll see what happens. not off to a good start losing to nc state last year |
| When people say one school is so much better than another school “academically”… what does that even mean? Especially at this level of universities? Genuine question. |
It means they have popular notions about a college and just assume their evidence (US NEWS ranking) to be true. |
source is their ass |
+1 |
Duke also strong in biomed engineering and biochem engineering. |
Lol. Pretty sure people go to Duke because it consistently places kids in the top jobs, grad schools, etc. Top programs in the sciences, quantum computing, humanities, etc. Clearly some very salty people regarding Duke on here, but I understand because it’s the closest “highly elite” school for placements in the DMV. My kid applied and was rejected but is happy at UVA, and I would argue UVA in-state is one of the best deals in the country. |
How is UVA in-state one of the best deals in the country. It’s far more than UC in state or Michigan in-state…especially for engineering. |
it does not in fact have top programs in the sciences or humanities relative to the others in the top 10 |
Is this based off the USNWR departmental rankings? I'm confused on why people are shitting on Duke's supposed lack of "top" departmental programs without data to back it up. |
You don't have to be THE best deal to be ONE of the best deals. I wouldn't count on UCB and UCLA holding onto their prestige forever if they remain test blind. |
You obviously are rating Duke highly based on its USNWR ranking. Yes that same ranking system also shows departmental strengths at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Of course it’s not all encompassing, but then again you do see many top ten schools rank very highly in many disciplines. You don’t observe this with Duke. |
A couple of niche areas. Not widespread. |
However, it’s not one of the best deals factually. For instate engineering it’s nearly 2x the cost of UMD for in state. Are you now going to claim it’s 2x better than UMD for engineering or in general? To be one of the best deals shouldn’t it offer in state rates that are generally lower than most in state schools…not the highest? |
I am not sure if UCB and UCLA not requiring SATs will hurt them that much in the long run. Even before TO, the SAT scores at Berkeley and UCLA were VERY low compared to their peers. For example, Berkeley's 25% SAT score was below 1300 pre-Covid, 2019-2020. It was even lower at UCLA. They don't care about having students with high SAT's. Of course, there has been a tremendous amount of data about the validity of the SAT in predicting student performance, including the UC's own studies. But politically I doubt California will ever reverse course. |
