Maureen Dowd column on Landon

I know one of the kids. Not such a good kid. Guess what ?His dad is a jerk too. His mother is lovely though.

I unfortunately know these boys and their parents. They are in ds' class. Jerks all around. They need to be expelled. They leave a trail of misery and have been in trouble for some time. The administration turns a blind eye. There were plenty of chances to get rid of them in Middle School.

I wonder how we are going to get through the next 3 years with these guys. What's next??

@21:44, no you are making excuses which have little to nothing to do with the issue at hand.

What in the world makes you think Landon doesn't have female administrators and board members? The board is half women, and the school is comprised of 42% women teachers.

3 out of 29 is half?

--------------------------------------
you dont know what you are talking about. It's not even close to 3 out of 29. 57% of the administration is female and 2 out of 7 teachers are female

Why would you tell such an obvious falsehood? Landon's website lists the Board and there are 26 men, 3 women. So I really doubt there are a lot of women classroom teachers in upper school--younger grades maybe, but not upper school. Here is the link re the board:

Considering all of you are talking about kids who hadn't even entered high school yet, don't you think you ought to give them a break? What would you do? Shoot them? Do you REALLY think that they are beyond the pale because of this stupid stunt? Do you really think these kids are not capable of learning from their mistakes, and if so, on what basis? I suppose none you ever made a mistake when you were dumb and unformed. There is a very weird psychology at play here. One for the books.

All of the top administrators--headmaster, lower school, middle school and upper school are men. The heads of the US, LS, and MS are Landon alums. The headmaster is the former college roommate of the lacrosse/football coach. No women have a position of authority in the administration, save the communications director. There are some women teachers in the US, most notably in English and Science. The Board of Trustees has 3 women.

PP -- The kids were freshman this year...the story is from last summer. No, they should not get a break. Maybe if someone had stopped GH soon enough...

That is an awfully long leap--and a total discussion killer. Your assumption is that kids are potential murderers because they do something tasteless and goofy when they are just out of middle school--I hope you do not work with adolescents. They will live down to your expectations.

When I read this sort of thing, I wish everyone had to sign their name to postings. So many of these observations strike me as attempts to engage in character assassinations of barely disguised individuals while at the same time implying that the poster is so much better than "those people."

Landon boosters abound pp

Actually, the kids have been punished and it is now time to leave them a individuals alone. Kids do to stupid things and we were all kids once. Give them a chance to learn. They are young and they can learn. Lets pray for all of our children.

pp:38 the poster in no way implied that they were better and 5:49 the poster said nothing that was a Landon booster comment. what they are saying is that a small group of kids who have a history of bad behavior have once again put their class and their school in a bad way. The teachers, adminitrators and parents have decided that Landon should suffer because they don't want to really do what is needed and get rid of them. Yes kids make mistakes but they also need to learn that their are reprucussions from mistakes. and it shouldbe that they leave school.

Wow. I didn't know that this was the set-up. The school is totally screwed from an organizational point of view. If this were a corporation, for instance, there would be little hope of saving it because of the intertwined, decades old, relationships within the administration. I now see why some parents and members of the administration have difficulty understanding that the school has deep cultural deficits. It's an unhealthy daisy chain with everyone reassuring everyone else that each incident is a isolated one-off. The truth is that many of us know of other incidents that are just as provocative, if not worse.
I think some wise member of the board should lead a well organized resignation that hands the reigns over to new blood, perhaps some board members with no association with the school - a concept in the corporate world known as independent board members. The administration should reach out to other peer private schools to conduct a cultural assessment. Perhaps, those peer schools should not include any local schools so that nobody confuses the results of the assessment with attempts by rivals to sabotage Landon. After reading all these posts, I really do think that the core of Landon's problem is an unhealthy obsession with winning Lacrosse games. That's not the whole problem but it is a recurring theme. If I were writing the assessment based on what I know, I would note in my conclusion that Landon has lost site of the phrase, ``Winning isn't everything, it's how you play the game.''
