Just don't look at how rural governors schools operate. If you think TJ admission lacks merit now, what happens if FCPS decides to emulate Shenandoah Valley or SWVA?

All part of the GOP/Youngkin’s plan to destroy public schools.

They want TJ to fail.

It wasn’t the GOP or Youngkin who replaced TJ’s merit-based admissions process with pork barrel geographic quotas. TJ isn’t going to fail, but it no longer has a clear purpose other than to serve as an alternative for above-average kids who’d otherwise be stuck at low-performing high schools like Justice, Lewis and Mount Vernon.

Fairfax County needs to close TJ. A lot of the students who hijacked this school came from outside the county and aren't even taxpayers. When the kids are out of TJ, they leave the county and the taxpayers holding the bag. I am so sick of it.

Gasakiya - TJ is a Regional Governor's School funded by the participating counties and the State. Other Counties paid for proportional renovation costs, TJ Partnership paid for much of the equipment/furniture and State pays TJ additional funds as a Governor's School.

Fairfax county is a very transient population due to military. You really want to deny a TJ education to a child based on the fact that their parent served their country?

How many military families have kids at TJ? They'd have to time it perfectly, and even then the kid will likely graduate from a different school

Ah. So that was the play.

Faux outrage as an excuse to kick out the principal.

I think that's the whole point of these made-up non-issues. Sure, they gave out notices a week or two after the school received them. I don't see that as a problem really but trying to paint it as one is just a way to try and create this fake outrage about the principal largely because these parents are angry they can't game admissions like they used to.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. My husband was active duty military and in his situation, and the situation of most service members I know, they retired around the time their kid(s) started high school. So, no more moving every few years---but in most cases they hadn't been in their current location for 5+ years.

For example:
Military member with 17 year of service gets assigned to the Pentagon and moves to Fairfax county with their spouse and 10 year old (5th grade) kid. Three years later, military member retires (because eligible at 20 years) and gets a civilian job in the same area. Military member's child is now in 8th grade and wants to apply to TJ-but under your "Five year" plan, child would not be eligible, because they've only lived in Fairfax county for 3 years.

When your kid applies to college, have them submit the application and all required materials a week or two after the due date. That really won't be a problem, right?

Fortunately, college applications aren't due until March, and students were notified about this lesser awarded in November. Also, it's not like you can't update your app since it's all online, provided you feel this is worth mentioning. I know when I got this I never bothered since it had no bearing because I'd won another 30 awards that mattered.

That is not true of all colleges. Early Decision is due by November 1 in most colleges. Certain majors/programs also require earlier due dates. But please, when your own child applies to college, insist they don't apply till March.

Wow, aren't you special?

But the kids getting into TJ today in many cases will have no awards other than their commended status, and you'd turn a blind eye to their not being notified promptly because people like you racked up dozens of awards.

Such arrogance on your part.

Haha this is kind of funny. So wildly ignorant of the current college landscape. Things have changed since you did your paper applications in 1985, Jenny.

Sounds like you are the one making stuff up. Not sure how anyone can defend the principal's behavior here.

It's like they want their cake and to eat it, too. They want everyone to believe TJ is special, yet engage in the fiction that all TJ students are equally accomplished. So it's still elitist AF, but also dependent on the notion that only TJ admissions officers, and not third parties like the NMSF, should be in the position to define or recognize merit.

Personally I think the TJ principal and the other administrator responsible for this latest FCPS debacle should be terminated. There is a difference between being a NMSF and being a Letter of Commendation recipient, but the latter still deserved to be notified by the school.

I am parent of a TJ kid. Rejected the first time round. I am angry at the admissions changes. Worked with Suparna and participated in many petitions/protest meetings. Had a negative view of the principal.

Child got into sophomore round, saw the principal in person and in action. I am still angry at the admissions changes. But my opinion of the principal changed completely. She is a fantastic leader and absolutely the right person to lead TJ.

There is enough nonsense on both sides of the debate. I saw that first hand. But the principal is a kind compassionate person.

The facts are being distorted to fit an agenda.

The right person to lead TJ is someone who doesn't want to recognize academic excellence? Seems completely wrong to me.

Love to know what facts are being distorted.
