TJ Failure to Notify Letter of Commendation Winners

Many years.

The Hawks didn’t want to hang a Semifinalist/2nd Place banner. That’s the world.

She’s a legit author. Google her and TJ. The article is based on facts if she wrote it.

No, she's a Trumphumper who pushing RWNJ propaganda.

This is not how an intelligent person responds to facts.

My kid was a NMSF at TJ. This was celebrated by receiving an email telling them to hurry up and pick up an envelope at the transcript window (where you went to request transcripts to be sent to colleges). The envelope had details of next steps in the NMSF process and congratulation letters from the offices of local congressional representatives.

There was no celebration of these kids - I found out who else was on the list that year from the Fairfax press release (around 150 or so). The fact that there were also commended kids wasn't something I recall being discussed at all.

It amused me that area private schools had photos in newsletters of their handful of NMSF and commended kids, while my kid got the "hurry up and pick it up" email.

Maybe TJ was concerned that those who didn't get a NMSF award would feel bad about themselves.

I can't stand people who respond to issues with name calling. When you respond to issues with personal attacks like racist, sexist, transphobic, groomer, left-wing, right-wing, maga....it just means you don't have a valid argument to stand on, or you're just incapable of making a valid argument. If you don't agree that the TJ administration is wrong, why don't you explain why rather than tear down the messenger?

I was responding to the inaccurate comment above: “She’s a legit author.”

Whatever credibility she had is long gone. Total Trumphumper.

So...because she supports Trump...her story isn't credible? It seems the TJ administration's response implies the veracity of her reporting. If you disagree with an aspect of her story, you should articulate that. Otherwise, it's just noise. Defining her by the political candidate she supports only means something in your own mind, and not necessarily to others. (I didn't vote for Trump, btw) Imagine if I called you a Bidenhumper? How stupid would I be to say that? It would add nothing to this discussion, other than to show that I'm stupid and inarticulate.

Can't address the content, so you attack the site. Typical elitist prick behavior.

NP. Your reaction to an honest question was so over the top that I decided to Google it. Unsurprisingly,

“ City Journal is a public policy magazine and website, published by the conservative Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, that covers a range of topics on urban affairs, such as policing, education, housing, and other issues.”
—Wikipedia

“ Overall, we rate City Journal Right Biased based on policy positions that favor conservative and libertarian causes and Mostly Factual in reporting due to a few misleading statements regarding climate change and same-sex marriage.”

Anonymous wrote:NM Commended is an award you put on college apps. And this affects 1/2 the senior class.

It’s a big screwup. My kid was a 2020 grad. The principal is awful and certainly nowhere to be found when there is a screw up. it doesn’t shock me no one there is saying: this is a screwup, we own it, and we will contact colleges on behalf of ED/EA affected students who ask us to do so.

Only thing this principal is interested in is if she is doing the bidding of the school board.

Isn't there a Petition to sign to recall the Principal?

I don’t see a problem. My DC was a Commended student at a non-TJ FCPS HS. It was not a big deal or even a little deal. I don’t understand the outrage on this thread about it. It is not something to put on the college application.

Not everyone is jumping on Reddit to find out the relevant cut-offs. It was clearly incumbent on the school to notify the commended students promptly and the school officials failed to do so.

I don’t think you know many TJ families. if ANYONE is jumping online and spreading the news through word of mouth what the cut offs would be that would be the TJ families.

From the article:
“One former student said he learned he had won the award through a random email from the school to a school-district email account that students rarely check; the principal neither told his parents nor made a public announcement.”

So it sounds like:
1) cut offs are publicly available info

2) the school emailed the kids the info at their school accounts

3) the school has already apologized so presumably will tell parents next time.

4) people are just miffed that there was not public recognition.

My kid is at TJ now and doing well but I like that the administration is trying to keep the academic competitiveness in check better.
