wasn't the purpose to eliminate the prep centers? they seem to do even better in this new system

The only thing that has any chance of reducing highly prepped kids is teacher recommendations. Most prepped kids will have a perfect GPA. Most prepped kid can ace any standardized test. Most prepped kids have been coached on how to write a wonderful essay. The only potential weakness for highly prepped kids is that the teachers might be able to tell the difference between the truly brilliant kids and the kids who are hard workers who pre-learned the material, but aren't necessarily that brilliant.

But teacher recommendations are apparently racist, so they eliminated those as well.

They aren't objective and are often inconsistent. I once had a teacher who disliked kids who wore certain kinds of shoes seriously. Let's stick to objective measures.

Let's stick to a holistic review.

You mean soft racial and SES quotas? Let's not.

Your kid should have gotten in and might have under the old system.

Yes we are all very confused...

He is also an excellent writer so I am sure he did well on his essay.

Considering it lucky the excellent writer doesn't get into TJ, where the curriculums heavily biased on STEM and English lit is a joke.

You are probably right. Also as a university STEM Prof at a top institution I am a bit weary of all the intensity surrounding TJ, and the pressure in general. Being on the other side of admissions and selection processes into STEM uni programs I am not convinced that this level of intensity is warranted at the high school level, but my son wanted to apply...so here we are...

Given that you are both a professor and local, I'm wondering what counts as a "top institution" in this context. UMD? GMU? You don't have to answer but this conversation feels uncalibrated.

Although her kid may be local, PP probably isn't local. She said "top institution".

I am a long distance commuter, not a prof in a DMV uni.

Fake news?

I went to the Curie thing and 90 people were accepted and 130 (at least) waitlisted. Usually they got over a 100 students in previous years so this is a huge decrease and most students are from feeder schools so it was expected anyways.

That only happened once!

Thats not true in previous years their highest was like around 150 it's only been growing recently they even posted all the names once

No. Their average number more like 50 so significant increase.

English and foreign language courses at TJ are very rigorous and intense. My son used to joke that TJ should be named Thomas Jefferson High School for Literature and Foreign Language. Just look at how well TJ students do in scholastic writing competition, various debate tournaments, Model UN conferences, poetry competitions, national yearbook awards etc.

As you know racial quotas are against the law, admission decisions are race-blind. Please stop trying to mislead people with this nonsense. I get it you liked the old system because you could buy admission. It kept the poors out etc.

Last time they publicly posted that info that one prep center accounted for more than 30% of the class.

Race is definitely considered even more so now than under the previous admission process.

School admin has been trying to trim world languages for some time now. For example, Japanese was on the cutting block 2 years ago, only to get a reprieve when students protested.

The sole Japanese teacher just left. He was instrumental in many exchange programs.

In the last few months, 1 Russian, 1 German and 2 Spanish teachers also departed.

With an expanded freshman class coming in, not sure what the school's plans are.

I guess URM students complained to Ann that there was too much homework with foreign language classes.

What a horrible, cynical, manipulative way to spin disapproval for a system which pits racial groups against one another, degrades the significance of academic achievement, and makes admissions a literal crapshoot.

TJ HS has been accepting donations from Private / Govt for setting up labs or programs etc which is unfair to poor HS. TJ High schoolers has advantage at College admissions and kind of buy admission.

Aunt Beckies of the world (white snowflakes) are the ones that actually buy college admissions not to mention immoral legacy admissions. Vast majority of TJ students are discriminated against in college admissions.
