This is the result of hunger marketing for STEM education, the strategy is to drive parents into emotional rather than rational decision making by means of making advanced STEM curriculums scarce commodity & exclusive to TJ. |
The new system is gameable. Plenty of ideas have already been discussed here. I know that are other (genius-level) admissions tricks that are being discussed in a WhatsAp group that haven’t been mentioned here. Parents that moved to the US for TJ are not going to give up. |
but far less so than the old one for sure! |
+1 |
Keep telling yourself that. I'm sure you convinced yourself ![]() |
Who does that? We are Indian and had one kid graduate this year. We know a lot of TJ families (obviously) but not a single Indian family that moved to the US to attend TJ. This is likely an urban myth along the lines of "All Asians prep". |
My child graduated from TJ a few years ago and we did know one family whose mom told me they moved here for TJ from another country. And then they had to do some complicated things to stay here for the younger kids in the family. She said she knew others who were doing the same thing and they helped each other out. She told me this about 8 or 9 years ago, so maybe no one is doing that anymore. |
Trust me - no one is doing that anymore |
This. Unless they keep it a secret. I do know a couple of Chinese families with kids in Private school, where the husband lives and works in China and the mother is in the US with the Child. Both the kids have been here for a very long time. I'd certainly not group them under "Parents that moved to the US so their kids can go to school here". |
So what is the problem? Are not they paying taxes to US Govt ? |
You are probably right. Also as a university STEM Prof at a top institution I am a bit weary of all the intensity surrounding TJ, and the pressure in general. Being on the other side of admissions and selection processes into STEM uni programs I am not convinced that this level of intensity is warranted at the high school level, but my son wanted to apply...so here we are... |
Has your kid done with course selection already at McLean HS? |
Just stop. It sounds pathetic. |
The mere mention of STEM sends the area into a state of excitement. |
Let's stick to a holistic review. |
