What? I am sorry, but that makes zero sense. |
I thought it was weird too and clearly intentional, but then I also thought, boat walkways are really narrow? Maybe he was just like finishing the single file part so he could turn around and face her? Idk it was definitely weird. Luke sucks so far pretty much but maybe he will redeem himself. He seems to take good care of the baby. |
I thought of the narrow pathway too, but he didn’t look back once to check on her. He just plowed ahead. Very odd. I agree he seems to take good care of the baby. |

He walked ahead to set up the shot where we see her from above about to step off - when she sees something or someone. How did you miss that? |
Yeah, I think the Luke haters are unreasonable. |
That article speculates that Serena could be treated as a traitor if she returns to Gilead after testifying against Gilead, not that she would in any way be punished for having her own biological child. People seem really hung up on the sex/fertility thing and it's just not that complicated. The men are allowed to have sex with the handmaids and the women at Jezebels - why on earth would there be some rule against them having sex with their own wives? Serena's pregnancy would be seen as a miracle/God's will and huge propaganda for Gilead. |
You should watch again. He walked ahead the whole way but turned back toward her multiple times, helped her down two sets of stairs etc. Only one person can fit on a gangplank. He walked down then waited for her at the bottom. I thought their reunion was very sweet. |
Serena had her handmaid impregnated by someone other than her husband. I don’t know who in the Gilead power structure knows that, but Fred does and won’t hesitate to use it against her if he needs to for his own benefit. That’s the sin, not having her own bio child. As far as Gilead is concerned, they would possibly be better served by Serena being a handmaid vs a Commander’s wife, assuming she is sent back to Gilead. |
Okay, but the PP said earlier the "sin" was that Serena was proven to be fertile. So which is it? And the fact that Fred has presumably fathered the child that Serena is currently pregnant with introduces the question of who is Nichole's biological father. I don't think it's a real stretch for Fred and Serena to portray June and Nick's relationship as something sneaky that they didn't know about. And the idea that Gilead would be happier to bring Serena back as a Handmaid instead of as a triumphant wife that has beat the modern world and had a miraculous child to boot is head-scratching. Serena conceiving her own child is basically the highest goal of Gilead. |
I would think that Serena would be obliged to return to Gilead.
She’s only in Canada because they were hoping she’d dish on her husband, helping Canada &/or what’s left of the old US government prosecute him for war crimes. But I doubt she’d do that to the father of her child. Would Canada want to keep her without her testimony? I could see Serena wanting to go back to Gilead, where she would be hailed as a saint and back in her ultra-religious world vs staying in Canada & treated as a freak and a pariah. |
Plus, Luke has witnessed many reunions where the rescued handmaids are hesitant to embrace. I took his cautious approach as being not sure what June was going to do. And Luke never expected June to rescue Hannah. June put that on herself. The whole purpose of the flashbacks was to show us that she thought Luke valued having a kid over her. |
The most recent episode was meh. Wish they’d condensed it to half an episode and made more things happen in the second half. |
And as a PP reminded us, June had told him she loved Nichole's father too. He really had no way of knowing how the reunion was going to go, and also didn't want to spook her. His face when he first saw her was moving. |
well actually she said the child was born of love - not rape. That's slightly different |
