Why is there such a racial/ethnic disconnect with TJ Admissions?

It is not illegal to discriminate in admission to a special advanced academic program within the public school system. It's based on merit. Yes that will discriminate against the less advanced. Not illegal.

That is why what is happening with TJ admission is illegal. Many of the Asain students there are not really qualified for TJ. They just crammed the test. Also HUGE number of mixed race kids. The students talk about it all the time : Blaision, Wasain, Fasion, Haole you name it.

it is not illegal to cram for a test or admit students with high test scores.

Non-Asians can't compete against Asian students based on criteria that were established by predominantly non-Asians and so they now complain about the tests and other criteria being unfair and rigged!

I agree. Invest more into the base high schools and provide academy classes at TJ, on a half-year based system, so students from many base high schools could make use of the facilities.

The academy classes thing is a good idea actually. One thing that would be cool is a humanities/social sciences/arts magnet program, which I honestly think may be even better for FCPS.

So "humanities/social sciences/arts magnet program" would be good for the county but STEM magnet program would be bad. Wonder why?

I am curious about OP's question. I asked this on another thread, but this thread seems most pertinent.

Isn't it discriminatory to admit so many of ANY background??!!

Has the media gotten wind of this??!! I am thinking about pursuing something here.

Isn't TJ a public school??!!

Actually, their policies discriminate against Asians.

"There has been speculation about the excuses FCPS might be using to discriminate against Asian students. One possible explanation might be the essays that all applicants must write as part of the TJ admission process. Asian students may not be as politically correct in their essays because they have not received coaching on such topics. Asian students are more likely to write about how hard they work to learn more and to achieve higher grades. That would not be considered as politically correct as writing about how wonderful diversity is, or how loving other people is more important than hard work and excelling in academics. But it’s only speculation since no one knows why, and how, FCPS is keeping deserving Asians out of TJHSST—yet it is common knowledge that they are."

How is this possible when such a large percentage of TJ acceptances are Asian? I think a large number apply and a large number are accepted. It could be that many of them look the same on paper as far as their extracurricular activities/ accomplishments and grades. Some will obviously not be accepted. The typical Asian TJ hopeful has taken prep classes and has done well in one or more of the following: Science Olympiad, Math Contests,Odyssey of the Minds, FLL. He/She also plays an instrument well and has great grades....

Without the discrimination, Asian percentage would be higher.

I agree -- great use of resources, would spread use to a larger number of students, and would fit in nicely with the STEM/STEAM academy courses at the several base high schools offering such courses.

Would also enable the large number of students interested in STEM/STEAM to do hands on work. If FCPS planned it well, it could serve as a great cooperative/internship program facility.
