Why is there such a racial/ethnic disconnect with TJ Admissions?

This is similar to UCLA and UC-Berkeley desperately trying to find ways to reduce Asians and increase blacks and Hispanics.

it is an impossibility because blacks and hispanics that score just as well as asians have the red carpet rolled out for them at HYPS so the only way UCLA/berkeley or any state school can get more blacks or hispanics is to get lower scoring/less prepared ones.

The high scoring ones all get snapped up by privates.

So, if colleges will discriminate in favor of blacks and Hispanics and against Asians, doesn't that even things out anyway? Asians are screwed anyway. Maybe it's better for blacks and Hispanics and worse for Asians since Asians have to study like crazy and still get discriminated in college admissions while URMs don't have to study as much. In fact, attending TJ would probably lower GPA for most students so, why bother. Just have decent scores and the URMs are in. No need to study 5 hours a day trying to survive TJ. Isn't it better to attend top colleges than attend TJ and mess up the chances?

Asians are far from screwed. They are arriving in the U.S., and in this area, in droves.

OP has a valid point. The number attending certain places is most certainly NOT representative of ANYTHING.

It is not illegal to discriminate in admission to a special advanced academic program within the public school system. It's based on merit. Yes that will discriminate against the less advanced. Not illegal.

That is why what is happening with TJ admission is illegal. Many of the Asain students there are not really qualified for TJ. They just crammed the test. Also HUGE number of mixed race kids. The students talk about it all the time : Blaision, Wasain, Fasion, Haole you name it.

it is not illegal to cram for a test or admit students with high test scores.

Non-Asians can't compete against Asian students based on criteria that were established by predominantly non-Asians and so they now complain about the tests and other criteria being unfair and rigged!

Do you have the same concern with Howard university ?

Do YOU? Why do you ask?

Are you concerned that OP's question might hit too close to home for you?

Are Asians setting up their own college anytime soon? Because I think you have arrived at a welcomed idea here. Let's get it started, shall we?

And all the teachers are white and run by white. No Asians. I guess we know who are profiting from all the prepping.

Why doesn't the committee learn to spot kids who have been prepped and prepped for years for TJ? I just don't see how a kid could really need a school like TJ if they need this much extra help to even manage to fill out the application.

And then people wonder about freshman needing extra help with Algebra II. Well, of course they need help, they needed all that extra help to get in, you can't expect them to understand Algebra II without tutoring once they get there, can you?

That is why the admissions office needs get rid of all subjective components and make the test much more difficult. Weed out all weak students including ones who prepped of all races.

I would suggest that increasing the importance of the test would only exacerbate the problem. It's just too easy to game a test.

Having a variety of criteria for entrance at least helps to ensure that the school will continue to serve kids who are highly intelligent, but may think and learn in a variety of ways. Teacher recommendations are one good way to check that test performance reflects a student's daily classroom behavior. Essays allow the committee to see good writing skills and the SIS shows outside activities, which give the committee insight into a student's self-discipline and organizational ability. TJ is for kids who can do the math and more.

we went there but DC complained the teachers had such heavy Indian accents it was difficult to understand what they were saying so we pulled out after a few weeks. The Indian kids, and make no mistake they were nearly all Indian, didn't seem to mind a bit going to class at 8:30 on Saturday morning - so I can't say they were being abused or stressed because they didn't seem to mind at all.

I would get rid of TJ and eliminate one of the major incentives for elementary school test prep. The powers that be never envisioned that setting up TJ would have such an impact on behavior. It does not encourage a holistic approach to learning, but instead just rewards the lab rats.

they probably never envisioned the Asian invasion and explosion of H-1b visas either, so what? This is not a story about TJ and what it offers, but who is now applying. They have brought their test-prep culture with them. And admissions to the elite high schools in China is even more competitive. Various forms of outright bribery of school officials are not uncommon. At least we haven't gotten there yet.
