Hired by Google as L4 but rejected by top colleges

Nope---this kid applied to largely Highly selective schools with the most highly selective major(very highly selective at all of theses schools). System isn't broken, there are simply more kids who want to attend than there are spots in CS at these schools. Want to get an acceptance, apply to several schools in the 30-80 range or beyond with excellent Eng/CS programs who have acceptances above 20-25%.

It's "broken" in a sense that it's not just about academic achievement but a bunch of other stuff, like where you live, and what your skin color is - things the college applicant has no control over.

University of Washington OOS CS acceptance rate is 2%. Almost everyone who ultimately gets accepted has started their own business/coded for a company for a few years/etc. Plenty with that CV also get rejected, because (it's simple math) 98% of applicants are REJECTED.

U Md should lobby hard for Stanley to come here. - he would be a great asset and there would be many national opportunities for him in DMV.

Well not really (and I say this as a parent of a child in a high achieving school district).
The latter went against their whole social network and system of beliefs most likely. They either didn’t have a parent who pushed them, or this family was the odd one out.
As someone who grew up in a place where people were encouraged to grow where they were planted and not want for much, I say it takes a lot of luck with your family and personality to stand out.

You think that asking for colleges to publish their admissions criteria is a scam?

This kid went on live TV with more poise than anyone here. He laid out the facts and asked similar for colleges to tell students how they decide admissions. He didn't demand entry or claim racism.

His objective independently-verified credentials, from multiple organizations, from the school district to College Board to Google to the free market, are better than anyone's here. But you invent reasons to hate him because of your inferiority complex.

The kid is an objectively good student, no doubt
However he would have NEVER been able to do two things: create a startup and get a job at Google
I am an immigrant also, and I know very well to what lengths immigrant parents go to give their kids a leg up. They don’t stop at pretty much anything if they can get away with it.

My parents were uneducated Asian immigrants. People, no matter their skin color, will use whatever means they can to give their kid a leg up. This type of thing is not limited to Asian immigrants. What a racist comment.

You are either a troll, ignorant, or self loathing.

I never said only Asians or only immigrants. Please don’t look for racism here, tough luck! Give that cr*p to gullible whites.
Bringing a desired candidate for an interview is not frowned upon even at Google. I know for a fact of a high level south Asian manager at another big tech company who had his son interviewed and accepted on another team. Not saying the son is undeserving but it’s the access issue, there are many like him. And no I am not saying that only Asian managers do that!
Same goes for “his” startup.
I actually hope colleges start accepting normal kids with normal high achievements, that’s all.

Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg both lied about their startups, I guess? Oh wait, you meant to say only immigrants lie. Maybe you get that impression from your own family tradition?

Were they sophomores in HS when they created them?
I never said ONLY immigrants lie.
And personal attacks are a sign of losing an argument

"They [immigrants] don’t stop at pretty much anything if they can get away with it.", "nice American people"...
You already lost the argument. I was just disgusted that you sucked dikk like this.

As I said I am an immigrant myself. I can handle the truth. Save the “immigrants are all such great people and so good for our country” for Americans
I mean of course there are great people like you or me but also let’s call out dishonesty where we see it

So many people came here with nothing and succeeded with hard work and smarts. It’s the American Dream. If you work hard enough then you will go up. Our society already gives so much help to the needy.

Haha you came here and you are trying to hoard the opportunities here. Tough luck I guess.

DP

His dad did not get all those amazing grades and test scores.

I don’t see why people are minimizing the obvious - it is insane that someone like Stanley with exemplary grades, test scores and EC initiatives that any adult would be rightly proud of, was rejected from the vast majority of colleges he applied to (and several were in state publics for him).

He literally has to study on the other side of the country from his family in either Texas or Md ( please choose Md Stanley).

Our DC was accepted at some of the colleges on his list and had no where near as impressive ECs as Stanley.

Stanley will flourish wherever he goes as he has brains and heart.

I’m not reading 24 pages on this but his dad is a software engineering manager at Google. That’s probably how he got an interview and was able to demonstrate his skill level. So a bit different from a random high stats kid applying to a job at Google.

don't be an idiot.

I used to live in Ca. Went to college there. There are ways to get around "race blind". The UCs have figured out a way around that as much as possible. Even they stated that there were going to find ways to get around Prop 209.

https://newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/how-ucla-has-responded-to-proposition-209

In 2006, the UCLA Academic Senate approved a holistic model for freshman admissions in which each application would be read and considered in its entirety rather than having sections reviewed by different people. Proponents of the new approach, which does not consider race and other factors that are prohibited by Proposition 209, believed the more individualized and qualitative assessment of each applicant’s entire application would be the fairest and most effective method of providing access to all underrepresented applicants. The strategy was already being employed by UC Berkeley.

your use of the phrase "nice American people" in relation to this guy's race and your statement about his father makes your statement racist.

I know for a fact that interviews are hard to come by in Google even if your dad is a high level manager. As I stated, nepotism is highly frowned upon at Google. Don't care about other tech companies. This guy is now at Google, so the other tech company you are referring to has no bearing on this discussion as it relates to this guy.

Exactly. A 1590 should be spectacular no matter what the kid’s high school is. A student should be judged according to his/her own merits, not relative to the students around him.

Welcome to US college admissions. It’s been like this forever and has nothing to do with race.

No college wants to fill their class with kids from only a handful of magnet schools.

+1

If they are drawing over and over again from the same high schools they will stop getting applications (and the fees) from everywhere else. That is a lot of money left on the table. And state schools would soon be under so much political pressure. Funding could very easily be cut.
