Hired by Google as L4 but rejected by top colleges

That's what I find weird about some of this thread- how quick people are to say that there must be something wrong with this kid. Nope. We should asking how to fix the real problem instead of denigrating a high school kid.

There is nothing wrong with the kid. He’s just competing for spots against the other extremely well-qualified kids from his own HS. This isn’t rocket science, people.

Seems weird to me he’s questioning how college admissions work. My school college counselor told us this 20 years ago.

1. School has minimum stats — don’t meet them, you’re rejected
2. Essays are read by overworked readers — you have a boring essay or catch your reader on a bad day, you’re rejected
3. Holistic admissions/sports/random other stuff that makes one kid more attractive to the school than another — all sorts of weird stuff comes into play here, including if the school thinks you’re unlikely to attend they might reject you for that

My guess is most of the schools felt he wouldn’t attend/wouldn’t finish. A lot of top schools don’t want students with divided attention which means the objectively excellent job offer from Google would count against him. He sounds like he has both solid college options and a solid job lined up — why are we supposed to feel sorry for him?

Again, trying to make up phantom reasons to justify the racial discrimination. Classic left.

I question that the admissions department personnel understood all of the coding things he was doing.

Also too many Asian applicants to the top colleges.

Equity requires admitting students from other races with lower stats.

That's racist and unconstitutional as SCOTUS ruled.

You think dad (an non-native-English-speaking immigrant, BTW) took time off of his high-level job to take his kid's school tests and APs and SATs and create is startup software and business?

You think that asking for colleges to publish their admissions criteria is a scam?

This kid went on live TV with more poise than anyone here. He laid out the facts and asked similar for colleges to tell students how they decide admissions. He didn't demand entry or claim racism.

His objective independently-verified credentials, from multiple organizations, from the school district to College Board to Google to the free market, are better than anyone's here. But you invent reasons to hate him because of your inferiority complex.

The kid is an objectively good student, no doubt
However he would have NEVER been able to do two things: create a startup and get a job at Google
I am an immigrant also, and I know very well to what lengths immigrant parents go to give their kids a leg up. They don’t stop at pretty much anything if they can get away with it.

My parents were uneducated Asian immigrants. People, no matter their skin color, will use whatever means they can to give their kid a leg up. This type of thing is not limited to Asian immigrants. What a racist comment.

You are either a troll, ignorant, or self loathing.

I never said only Asians or only immigrants. Please don’t look for racism here, tough luck! Give that cr*p to gullible whites.
Bringing a desired candidate for an interview is not frowned upon even at Google. I know for a fact of a high level south Asian manager at another big tech company who had his son interviewed and accepted on another team. Not saying the son is undeserving but it’s the access issue, there are many like him. And no I am not saying that only Asian managers do that!
Same goes for “his” startup.
I actually hope colleges start accepting normal kids with normal high achievements, that’s all.

DP

His dad did not get all those amazing grades and test scores.

I don’t see why people are minimizing the obvious - it is insane that someone like Stanley with exemplary grades, test scores and EC initiatives that any adult would be rightly proud of, was rejected from the vast majority of colleges he applied to (and several were in state publics for him).

He literally has to study on the other side of the country from his family in either Texas or Md ( please choose Md Stanley).

Our DC was accepted at some of the colleges on his list and had no where near as impressive ECs as Stanley.

Stanley will flourish wherever he goes as he has brains and heart.

Exactly, his grades are great, not sure if the rest of the stuff is genuine.
His family is rich, he can afford out of state.
I don’t know who they accept in state.
Maybe even the progressive UCs don’t want their schools to be 80% Asian? Who knows!

your use of the phrase "nice American people" in relation to this guy's race and your statement about his father makes your statement racist.

I know for a fact that interviews are hard to come by in Google even if your dad is a high level manager. As I stated, nepotism is highly frowned upon at Google. Don't care about other tech companies. This guy is now at Google, so the other tech company you are referring to has no bearing on this discussion as it relates to this guy.

His dad is not American. Let’s lay off the fake anti racism and face the fact - not all culture are high trust.
And I am sorry but I can’t believe that knowing someone at Google doesn’t give you a leg up compared to other equally qualified people.

NP. The PP is right, though. Google is extremely anti-nepotism, to the point where having a relationship with someone there is often a mark against an applicant. The company is known for it.

Ok, I guess color me persuaded.
I had a sneaky suspicion that things have changed under Sundar but maybe not.
Well then I guess colleges don’t want that many Asian males in their CS programs?

Other than a lower gpa, I can't imagine how many other kids are better than this kid.

This explains why a kid I know who had been already working in a CS job when he applied to college got rejected from T15s.

to add.. it's a shame that these supposedly great colleges are more interested in keeping their dropout rate low than helping to educate a brilliant person.

All the top 50 schools indicated they will find a way to circumvent and UCs have been circumventing for decades.
