Imagine the daughter of a rabbi saying "I just know I'm am Muslim. That is why I took the name Mohammed. This is my heritage, a part of me. And my friends call me Shitstain because I can't wipe my ass, so that's why I decided to call myself Shitstain Mohammed. Would you question my Muslim identity if I wasn't a rabbi's daughter? How dare. But Shitstain Mohammed is a great conversation starter!"

I think Whoopi should be fired for saying the things she said.

Because most people would.
Some have said things more benign & have been canceled immediately.

Of course the Holocaust was about race - in fact that was the catalyst for it occurring in the first place.
The Germans viewed the Jewish people as an inferior race.
That is why they elected to clear Europe of these people.

And tragically they put a huge dent into this “inferior” race.

About ten yrs. ago I was more than convinced that the Holocaust was so far back in history that there was no way that it could happen again.

Then Trump was elected President & I lost my faith.

Trump never spoke in a dignified manner - instead he spoke like a common dictator.
When he said that Mexicans were rapists, then later on called Covid the “Chi**** Virus” it made me think of how Hitler spoke of the Jews.

Trump should definitely have been canceled for all the mean stuff he said + did - but he amassed too many followers to be left out in the cold.
Which until the day I die I will never be able to wrap my head around.

When I hear survivors of the awful Holocaust, “never forget” —> “do not let history repeat itself” etc., I feel like society in general has a responsibility to make sure none of these survivors (as well as non-survivors) did not suffer and die in vain.

This kerfuffle is viewed by many as important because it gets at the fundamental question: are Jews white? It’s an easy question for right-wing trolls like me to answer (who cares, why would you even ask?), but the stakes are extremely high for the social justice left, which has to decide where Jewish people fit in the intersectional pecking order. Based on my observations, most Jewish people in DEI-related discussions seem to want to position themselves as not white (for obvious reasons), while most POC appear to think of them as white. I suspect this issue is going to come up a lot.

The article yesterday about Whoopi contributing a recipe for a fancy pants CT community cookbook back in the 90s confirms what I thought: she thinks joking about or punching down on Jews is totally fine because she simply doesn’t understand their plight.

The recipe she submitted: Jewish American Princess Fried Chicken.

A black guy on Fox News last week (I think his name is Tyrus and he’s on Gutfeld’s show—saw the clip on YouTube) explained that Whoopi is basically an old black lady and her lack of awareness (at best) or antsemitism (my word, not his) is common among her demographic. That also tracks with my real world experience.

In short: she doesn’t understand the plight of the Jews because she’s spent her life believing stereotypes. Her worldview is that Jews hold all the power. They’re the most powerful, privileged of the whites. As such, how could they really know suffering?

And as a black person, she sees black/white racism as the sole lens of everything. It’s a very American way of thinking, and it’s not new.

I bet you a million bucks that if you asked Whoopi or any black person her age how she feels about Asians, she would probably argue they aren’t a persecuted race either. She would say they are practically white and privileged. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that from older black Americans.

FTR, the people on the fox segment were seemingly defending Whoopi. They said she was wrong, learned from her mistake, and apologized.
