Kids are getting Covid at my kids school because they hung out outside of school unmasked.

So sure let's take off the masks in school too and just let Covid spread!!!

I'm sure it's because they weren't wearing a mask. That's exactly it! lol

Sorry come again? You know better than the contact tracers I guess?

BWHAHAHAH Contract tracers. Cream of the crop " employees"

You anonymous internet troll think you know more about a Covid transmission that I posted about -- that you literally know nothing about. And then insult the people whose job it is to deal with it.

Because this doesn't fit your anti mask agenda.

Pretty much says it all about the Covid denial anti science crowd.

And for what it is worth, I voted early for Yougkin. He may allow the mandate to be lifted but local school shoudl be able to, and will in my opinion, keep them for a while.

You fool.

Exactly - OP wants kids to mask for at least 5 more months before even talking about offramps. These people are nuts.

Once kids have had a chance to get vaccinated, they need to come off. And kids are going to school in many parts of Europe without masks but OP says requiring masks here "is safe and it is working." LOL

And more older kids vaccinated?!? Isn't APS at like 95% of kids 12 and over vaccinated?!? WTF.

I was just talking with another teacher in our NoVA district during Trick or Treating tonight and we were both saying we hope masks become optional this spring once ages 5-11 have sufficient chance to be vaccinated. There are schools in many parts of the US that have kids and teachers going to school without masks. It's not just Europe. I'm not saying we should go without masks now, but we have to set a point at which we can. Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax...they are all in the 2.2%-3% positivity range right now and 5-11 year olds aren't even eligible for the vaccine yet. Infection rate is around .89 to .90 in those three districts. Daily new case counts are in the 8-10 range per 100k. If it continues to trend downward and children get vaccinated, I can see our 7 day average case counts dropping to close to where they were this past summer.

I agree. Once the 7 day average stays in the "low" range, we should start to lift the mask mandate in schools.

Mask offramp coming soon - inauguration day, January 15th!

At that point, anyone who wants their 5 to 11 year old vaccinated will have had the opportunity for 2 months. Zero COVID is never going to happen for an endemic virus. My kids will be maskless at school the first day they can.

Will your kids have been vaccinated?

Nope, not until it's fully approved. Even the FDA hearing said there was no solid evidence yet that vaccinating these kids who rarely get sick was going to reduce transmission.

No vaccination mandates for VA either (mandating the COVID vaccine for school is insane, considering how many years all other mandated vaccines were on the market before they were mandated to attend school).

My kids only mask where legally required anyway. There's packed football stadiums on the weekend and we are restaurants every weekend, but they have to suffer COVID safety theater all week long for a virus that will be here forever and which is effectively 0 risk to them. I'm so happy for my kids!

Where are you seeing this? Or is this just what you hope? I’d love kids to be able to unmask by Jan., but I’m not holding my breath.

I'm curious why you think Youngkin would do anything else.

Can Youngkin force individual school districts to remove their mask mandates?

I agree. I would like to be able to teach without my mask on. My students are 3-4 so they aren't vaccine eligible, but also not particularly high risk. I'd like it to be optional for them as well. I'd be fine with masking in the halls FWIW.

He has a GOP statehouse-- they can pass an anti-mask mandate like the one in Florida. It wouldn't stop you from sending your kid in a mask but would stop the school district from requiring it. VA is not FL -- and I'd be surprised if he did it. But it's not out of the realm of possibility.

I'm hoping that most school districts start to remove the mask mandate now that kids are eligible for the vaccine. The state mandate will be lifted Jan 15 and then pressure is on for APS. I'm guess Loudon will fall first with fiarfax a month later. And maybe by May APS will finally relent and go option. God I hope it's before then. And, for everyone else, of course they can keep on masking. get an n95 to to protect yo' self and leave me and my kids out of it.

I think the earliest APS relents is spring break. Parents will argue that their under-5s aren't vaccinated yet.

Yeah, I don't think the unmasking will be happening soon. There is still too much volatility in outbreaks within schools and kids 5-11 won't be anywhere near herd immunity until at least May or June judging by the adult process.

We're okay with masks continuing indefinitely. Kids are all wearing them fine. Their parents may be berserk with anxiety but the kids are fine and going along to get along.
