There will be growth in private schools, I suspect.

I think it's hilarious that people think the private schools around here want/will accept their kids. Go ahead and take your voucher and see how far it gets you.

I believe in public schools, but if you do not understand that there will be ADDITIONAL private schools, I think you are sadly mistaken. Do you even read this forum?
Sadly, most Fairfax parents do not believe their children will be affected. If this plan goes as SB wants, more kids will be affected than parents realize. Just wait until they have two kids assigned to two different high schools.

What do they plan to do with AP/IB students when they start the shift?

Where are they going to get the additional buses needed?

I wouldn't send my kid to a new pop-up private school that exists solely to gobble up voucher dollars. Good luck with the college rat race.

I wouldn’t send my kids a school with a gang problem. I guess different priorities 🤷‍♂️

Look into the private school shift in the South in the 70's after desegregation and how horrible those schools are to this day and then get back to me.

Ummmm.... we ARE in the south lol.

NOVA is most definitely NOT the South.

The assertion was that integration caused a decline in public schools. Do pick up a book or, what's easier, search online about VA and Fairfax County in particular. We are in the south, and the schools were racially segregated. If desegregation caused schools to suck, why did FCPS have such a great reputation when they were forced to desegregate just like the rest of the south?

Don't be slow.

When I say the South, I mean the DEEP South. Where desegregation actually did NOT happen in many communities like it happened in NOVA. Shoddy private schools were thrown up so that white kids didn't have to go to school with black kids in those deep South Areas.

It doesn't take much of a leap to see the similarities here as people start talking about all the new private schools that are going to appear in Northern Virginia if their kids are rezoned.

I don't want to be rezoned anymore than anyone else because I love my pyramid. But the private school threats are just tacky.

I can understand those who want to keep their kids at a high school so they can finish out their academics at the same school. I cannot understand those who are complaining about going to school with poor kids.

This is what you want to believe. We don’t worry about poor kids, I grew up very poor.

We worry about gangs. Tell me how does the left square the increased risk of school violence that you seem to want to impose on innocent neighbors? Make the schools safe, then we can talk redistricting

Not sure I understand. I know more and more UMC and MC families going private. I also see a lane for renting in a desired school district at a couple thousand dollars a month. Before you claim that is residency fraud, I urge you to look up the hayfield scandal and how the superintendent blessed the whole arrangement.

The fact is, most families are not going to send their kids to the redistricted schools. All the sb will do is splinter the communities that they move.

I think you vastly over estimate how much money and time the average family has.

Schools are considered failing when their test scores are drastically lower than other schools in the county and when their disciplinary incidents are drastically higher. Feel free to send your kids to one of those schools, because most families avoid them for good reason

Do you not understand: People want to stay where they are!

Ask yourself --why were Chantilly parents who were redistricted to Oakton so upset? Chantilly had LOTS more poor kids than Oakton and still does.
It was because: 1) they liked Chantilly and were involved in the school; 2) most of the kids at their middle school go to Chantilly; 3) Chantilly was lots closer; 4) they played youth sports in CYA; and, 5) Chantilly was very close to the neighborhood. Oakton was a long bus ride.

Sure, they probably want to stay at Oakton now--more than fifteen years later. But, at that time it was very upsetting. I imagine there are some who would rather be at Chantilly because of the proximity, etc.

Do you not understand that "going to school with poor kids" just may not be the issue.

However, some of these schools are known for their gangs. Until FCPS addresses this issue, no one will be happy to be sent to those schools. And, yes, most FCPS schools have some gang activity, but there are a few where it is prevalent. This needs to be addressed yesterday.
Funny, I never hear this issue discussed at SB meetings.

That should be the concern Not fake boundaries.

Are there worse optics in the world than the school board members with kids sending their kids to the better performing schools and ensuring that there is no risk of being redistricted for their own kids while arguing that other people’s kids should be forced to go to there poor performing schools?

It should be required that all the SB’s kids get moved too. Oh and the fcps staff’s kids too. At least the ones who are on BRAC.

Where is the data on this? I keep hearing it, but I haven't seen it. Where is the gang data by high school? Violence numbers, etc. FCPS school profiles are useless - the last data set is during the pandemic when no one was at school.

Oh yes it is. Look at Chantilly and Centreville. Centreville is slowly going downhill because of a certain demographic although they are a few miles apart.

Fake news. Look at the data. It is all there on VDOE website. Schools that have a higher hispanic population have lower test scores, more absenteeism and higher farms. It is like this across the district, not just the "bad" schools. We have an immigrant problem.

Yep, they can rezone part of Tysons to Langley and move part of Great Falls to Herndon, and it will just help fill some of those new rental buildings now zoned to McLean.

The families are far smarter than the social engineers looking to screw Langley, West Springfield, and McLean. Maybe it’s private school or maybe it’s just a new address. Our kids aren’t your pawns.

DP. Just about every School Board candidate or member touts their neighborhood affiliation. Are you really this stupid?

Again - root cause in FCPS - poor ESL students, many of whom have little formal education in their native country (or if born here, their parents have little formal education). Nothing against them personally, but that is what has made certain schools perform as they do.

Perhaps we should not have imported so much poverty so quickly. Now the county has to deal with that.

And people in this county are absolutely behaving like the folks did in the south in the 60's and 70's. Actually, as someone pointed out, segregation was everywhere...

See this article: https://www.npr.org/2022/07/14/1111060299/school-segregation-report

Some folks on this board have even proposed creating separate districts out of FCPS - a tactic cited in the article for further segregation.

I’m sure you’re under-estimating the unwillingness of MC and UMC people to send their kids to schools that are either failing or falling apart.
