Protests on college campuses

Instead of criticizing them on an anonymous message board, isn't it better to understand where they are coming from and if they have any legitimate points that should be considered? The fact that the protests have continued so long on some many very different college campus is enough that people shouldn't dismiss them.

What does "trigger" mean?

I feel the same PP. But let’s face it. Most of the people posting on this thread or the multiple Gaza threads are not interested in understanding where the other side is coming from. They just want to score points for their perspective while arguing with strangers an anonymous forum.

A Wake-Up Call

I was never a fan of the Israeli government at all. Since I’ve understood this issue, which for me has been about 30 years, I’ve always believed Israel’s land grabs are vilely wrong. I’ve always said we need international law to hold them accountable. I’ve also always said there needs to be a 2-state solution because the people are there now and you can’t just have them leave the area entirely. That’s like asking most of us in the US - who had nothing to do with the horrible founding of our country - to leave. (And even then, Jews do at least have some historical connection to the region, which is more than most of us can say in the US.)

All that said, I’ve never had any sympathy for Israel - until Oct 7. It’s that simple. And I shouldn’t have to explain that further. There’s no “but”. The fact that these protests started just days later by kids who didn’t know shit before that and that some of you are eating it up too, just shows how effective the terrorist propaganda brainwashing machine has been.

This was and is an act of terrorism. This is like all of you celebrating 911. It’s the same fking thing. And back then a small domestic fringe did. And even me back then as a young person, I certainly didn’t celebrate it but I did feel that our imperialist policies were the cause. See I was “woke” well before any of you knew what that was. But I’ve grown up and I’ve learned about the true state of geopolitics. The reality is every day is a game of thrones no matter how much we wish the world could be different. What leader do you want? What global order do you want? It won’t be a utopian benevolent one. I’ve come to terms with that. We can have US democracy with all of its warts, we can have authoritarian rule, we can have extreme religious fundamentalist totalitarianism.

Take your pick. Because whether you realize it or not, that’s exactly what each of us are doing right now. We are choosing.

Zionists stole land and then attempt to re-write history.

And then the Zionists cause the Palestinians as terrorists. Come on, what would you do if your home was stolen by invaders??

Do you know who the first occupants and invaders were thousands of years ago?

Science and documented history shows that:

1) Both Jews AND Palestinians are close genetic cousins.
2) Judaism pre-dates Islam.
3) Many (not all) Jews left the region for Europe and interbred there with Europeans.

What does this mean? It's clear: the people living in the region who were Jewish either left, converted, or remained true to Judaism.

What does that mean? people with Jewish ancestry do have a historical tie to the land, but that tie is not any stronger that then Palestinian tie.

I am Jewish through my father. I do not feel I should move to Israel and live there. It makes no sense to me that I could, but a Palestinian whose family owned a thriving fruit orchard cannot.

Thank you very much for your balanced, reasonable post. This was refreshing to read for me, a person who opposes the continued war yet. I also believe Israel has a right to defend itself—- within reason.

Even if you tried to argue that their presence did diminish, in any way, the legitimacy of the protest, Israel has such a vibrant, lengthy reputation for cosplaying other groups through false flag operations to achieve its own goals that it would be impossible to discount ANY protest, no matter how much it might be disagreeable. That’s what happens when one side operates without integrity. Nothing they say is believed without extraordinary investigation, follow-up, and analysis because of their track record.

This is insane. And I say this as a moderate Democrat with no ties to Israel. Crap like above makes me strongly pro-Israel even if I wasn’t before, because you sound like an antisemitic lunatic.

Oh please, pretending you’re not 10 knuckles deep into pro-Israel ideology isn’t fooling anyone. Mossad does exactly what you bolded daily. Again … daily. Costumes, false flag operations, impersonations, etc. It’s standard SOP and even they don’t deny it. But you do.

Israel intentionally bombed the USS Liberty over and over again, and then denied it despite overwhelming evidence that they knowingly killed those sailors. Israel manufactured the false evidence of WMDs in Iraq and then goaded us into that quagmire of a war, for obvious self-serving reasons. They lie about every single IDF atrocity. Wouldn’t even know where to begin with the IDF dishonesty.

If you believe anything coming out of Israel these days, you’re just a gullible chump. There’s a reason that it’s common knowledge not to trust Israelis, and if you’re not familiar with that rule, you’re either uninformed or you’re lying.

The pro-Israel provocateurs in these college campus protest / counter-protest conflicts did exactly that … FFS, there are videos of Jewish antagonists forcing their way into the middle of protests at Columbia and UCLA, pretending to be with the protesters, screaming actual anti-semitic slurs and trying to exhort others to join in, only to be booed.

Wake TF up. Nobody paying attention buys your make believe shock at these accusations based on fact.

You are convincing more and more people that Israel is right every time you write. You are a vile antisemite. I am someone who has joined pro-Palestine protests over the years (peaceful ones) and I cannot be on the same side as someone like you. I read the garbled, incoherent nonsense you wrote and I want nothing to do with it.

Unfortunately for you, most normal Americans feel like me. You are losing the war for public opinion badly. People like you are why these protests are wildly unpopular in the US. You turn people pro-Israel every time you open your mouth.

Agree with all of this. There is very clear archeological evidence that both groups have ties to the region and each other. That this has meant Israel came in and just seized land from Palestinian families is absolutely disgraceful. That it was allowed to continue unchecked this long is a blight on the entire international community. Including other power players in the Middle East.

But where was this movement 60 years, 30 years, 10 years, 1 year ago???? Why NOW? Why right after Oct 7? Because terrorists are controlling the narrative now. Because social media has left our population vulnerable and impressionable. Because the overly simplified CRT curriculum in schools left our children ripe for this, thinking only in dangerously simplistic and antagonist dichotomies - all while the complex thinking and self-control center of their brains aren’t even fully developed.

This is a failure on so many levels. And it took so much sociological and political negligence to get us to this moment.

No, there is no excuse for 10/7. Terrorism - on both sides - is wrong. But you cannot view this as if it happened in a vacuum, that Hamas just attacked out of nowhere. Netanyahu, in particular, bears much of the blame for this, through his continued support for illegal expansion into the West Bank and his funding of Hamas in order to destabilize the Palestinian Authority.

Frankly I'm tired of the constant back and forth on this and being lectured about the history of the region. There has been religious conflict here for thousands of years and neither side seems capable of moving beyond ancient tensions. Both sides need to grow the hell up and settle this, most likely through a two-state solution.

There are two issues here:

1. The 76 year old conflict that requires amicable and fair resolution. Both leaderships are negligent of this failure.

2. There is something bigger brewing now. Our own people are being groomed for terrorism. And our United country is crumbling. The latter I think we can all see.
We are in WW but it’s more subtle because it’s a silent virus that was injected and is now festering from the inside. We need to get our shit together and it will take bold reform right now. Sadly neither presidential candidate is that person.

Power in hands of a few. People will say we have power to put people out of leadership but look at who will come in to lead. Leader X will be replaced by Y, and Leader Y will continue policies of Leader X. Where is democracy? Old weapons make way to terrorists while we here fund to make newer ones. Did I get to choose that?

I don't think anyone is being "groomed for terrorism". I think a new generation of students is tired of the constant conflict that soaks up a ridiculous amount of US foreign policy political currency without an end in sight, and they see the deprivation of the Palestinian people and Israel's frankly overboard reaction and want this shit OVER. Are there elements of these protests that are antisemitic? Yes of course but I think that's been wildly played up in the media as a means of diluting the message.

Or, because the Right is seizing this opportunity to promote its interests while attacking the Left during an election year. Their criticism of campus protests is ideologically related to other GOP hobbyhorses: anti-DEI, anti-CRT, anti-wokeness, anti-higher education (especially at universities perceived to be "elite"), and pro "law and order." I am not convinced that most folks on the Right actually GAF about Jews or Israel for themselves/itself.
