Anyone try an anti-inflammatory diet for joint pain AND have it actually work?

I have golf and tennis elbow and also disc issues that cause constant neck and back pain. Been in therapy of all types for 10+ years (you name it, I've done it). New PT is suggesting the yin/yang or hot/cold food diet. I tried gluten free a few years ago (but certainly didn't eliminate sugar) with no success. I'll probably give it a try for a few weeks (so if someone has a good book or website to recommend please do). Figured I'd also see if anyone on this board found it to be helpful for joint pain. Sweets in particular give me great joy and giving them up will be a serious endeavor for me. And I wouldn't be doing this kind of diet to attempt to lose weight, fwiw. Thanks!

Not the anti-inflammatory diet, but my husband has been having some relief taking Curcumin and Boswellia. Arthritis sucks.

I have been doing a Paleo diet. I had horrible hip joint pain but since following Paleo I have had no pain. I don't follow it strictly because I eat beans but I did cut the sugar out. I really like the diet but don't like the cult-like attitudes that many on the diet have.

My dad is super into it. He's become a health nut in lots of ways tho (including quitting a nearly 50 yr smoking habit) so I'm not sure which effect is greatest.

The best thing I have noticed is if I force myself to exercise. This seems to help with the joint pain. Also how is your weight? Anytime I am over 150 I feel it. I am not tiny by any means but over that 150 spot I just feel awful. I also have been incorporating more curry foods and ginger and even put cinnamon in my coffee..these are all help with inflammation. You may also want to try acupuncture..I go to Dr. Arthur Fann on Gallows road in Vienna..he is great. Very very basic office but he helped a lot.

Congrats on your dad giving up smoking. That is huge! Never too late to stop that!

Ha! I'd be a lot happier for him if he wasn't being such a doosh about his exemplary diet and exercise! LOL, I kid, I'm proud of him, but he is a member of the paleo cult, as pp mentions. My poor mom I will stand by another pp's claim that exercise is pretty universally accepted as an effective treatment for joint pain. It can be hard to get started. tho. Maybe swimming?

My good friend had his chronic arthritic-like inflammation (so bad around the ankles that it was hard for him to walk in the mornings) entirely disappear after getting rid of wheat and dairy (also eggs, but he thinks it was the first two). He's also reduced refined sugar a lot. Fatigue also dramatically reduced with the dietary changes.

He credits the book "Spent" for suggesting these moves. I can't remember how long it took, but maybe at least a month or so off the foods. Maybe even 6 weeks. Long enough that I haven't tried it yet for my own issues, but his improvement was dramatic enough that I probably still will.

Yes, it really really worked for me. There are a bunch of web sites out there with recipes and other forms of support. GL

I can recommend the book "Manifesto For A New Medicine"

Mil had great results with a nightshade free paleo diet forRA.

I have chronic inflammation, pain, and stiffness, and it does help me to avoid nightshades. Sad, because they're all so tasty.

For the months that I've managed to cut out a lot of carbs, in particular wheat, and drastically lower sugar (had to have a little chocolate or life wasn't worth living), I did feel a whole lot better. Now I couldn't manage to cut out dairy, so I can't comment. I didn't get a blood test done at the time, so I don't know if inflammation went down, but I felt less pain.

Give it a try and see if it works for you.

I had a lot of stiff joints and giving up gluten has helped a lot! Also, try eating cherries or cherry juice--good for inflamed joints.

Cherries also work for gout. (Stay away from asparagus.)

Yes-gluten free, dairy free when my Greek yogurt addiction is controllable ...helped

Reducing sugar is key! Also, limit red meat. Add fish oil to your regimen and vitamin d.
