I know three families in our Western County neighborhood that rented a 1 Br. Apartment in the Herndon MS district for next year and changed the mom and kids residency on paper. Kids will sleep in their own beds and someone will check the mail a couple of times a week. At least one also plans to self id as “mixed race” (mixture of two different subsets of Indians, which cracks me up). And in another case, the kid’s case even found an MD who gave him a neuropsych diagnosis because his parents wrote a check. The parents requested and got an iEP this spring. The parent figure this will help with standardized testing down the line.

And instead of an Indian kid from Carson who stands no chance, suddenly they have a mixed race kid with an IEP from Herndon.

I’ve even heard speculation from parents with SAHMs about parents officially separating for a few months so the kid can qualify as FARMs.

None of their rising 8th graders have been in the Carson building this year anyway so they don’t care that much about switching schools. And, the parents believe that it’s an easy path to TJ. It looks like they are right. They’ll take turns carpooling and do a lot of supplementing, AOPS, etc. at home. And, they have already signed up for one of those Asian style after school schools. They think think it’s a much easier path to TJ than staying at Carson. It’s smart. And since the system is going out of its way to screw over AAPIs who sacrificed to buy into good school Districts, more power to them.

One of these three sets of parents mentioned that a group at their mosque is doing basically the same thing, except in their case it’s RRMS with a temporary transfer to South County.

One thing all these parents have in common? They are donating and organizing for Glen Younkin. I think VA may really flip red this year.

No one things you know of “at least” 5 families gaming the system. I’m sure people do that…but you don’t know 5 of them doing this. Zero chance.

If you already have a kid there, are active in the PTSA s at TJ and Carson and are friends with people who have siblings applying, yes, you do.

No, you don’t.

Are you paying attention to what’s happening with the TJ PTSA? It’s crazy right now. And no one is crazier that parents with one kid in Taj and a second kid who will apply in the next couple years.

Plus, it’s more like three families. One of whom is discussing renting a cheap apartment with two other families.

If you don’t believe parents will do things like transfer their kids after they have sunk years into getting them into TJ, you’re crazy.

This is the results of ignoring the high demands of advanced STEM curriculums by FCPS board for years. Nobody is interested in fighting the traffic to go to TJ if the advanced STEM curriculums are made available at more base high schools. Yet FCPS board is more interested in playing politics than caring the actual learning for tens of thousands of kids in the county. FCPS is one of the worst in the country handing COVID remote learning, they'd rather spend time making political shows targeting TJ who has fame. If FCPS truly care URM, they should provide more support at the elementary schools to encourage them to involve the STEM at early age.

Changing this year's TJ admission process creates more social issues and division.

The only thing that has any chance of reducing highly prepped kids is teacher recommendations. Most prepped kids will have a perfect GPA. Most prepped kid can ace any standardized test. Most prepped kids have been coached on how to write a wonderful essay. The only potential weakness for highly prepped kids is that the teachers might be able to tell the difference between the truly brilliant kids and the kids who are hard workers who pre-learned the material, but aren't necessarily that brilliant.

But teacher recommendations are apparently racist, so they eliminated those as well.

Fake news?

I went to the Curie thing and 90 people were accepted and 130 (at least) waitlisted. Usually they got over a 100 students in previous years so this is a huge decrease and most students are from feeder schools so it was expected anyways.

They aren't objective and are often inconsistent. I once had a teacher who disliked kids who wore certain kinds of shoes seriously. Let's stick to objective measures.

Aka favors kids who don’t have a work ethic and are just average in math, taking Algebra I in 8th. No work ethic and no real aptitude == a high drop back rate. And what will mommy do when she discovers that getting into college requires prepping (ie, work)? This is the year of the Invasion of the Karen’s insisting their kid should get a free pass on doing TJ work and have an A without working night and day, because aptitude.

And, of course, come college admission, they are shocked that their kid ends up at a 3%rd tower kid whine that the “prepped kids” (ie, the ones who worked hard) are getting better college results.

It’s weird, there a MAGA like group out there dug into the idea that with your kid is smart, or your kid worked hard. And it blows their mind to see smart kids who work hard. When did hard work become something you look down on?

+1
Well put.

Anonymous wrote:Curious. Anyone accepted that has an IEP? Was having an IEP a “bump” up or down? Does a 504 plan “count” the same as having an IEP?

My son who was accepted has an IEP.

The reason so many students get in from Curie is not because of their test prep but because a lot of students that go to Curie are willing to put in hard work and effort. Probably over 300 people went there this year but not everyone will get in.
