I am a moderate and never voted by party lines until 2016 and the subsequent GOP sh1tting on the Constitution. I will never vote GOP ever again. |
Nice attempt to spin.
"anti rigor agenda" is blatant lie. If you can't LIE or spin you have nothing. |
Uh huh. You were a Democrat and still are. I was a Republican and I am never voting for them again, but not because I believe all the asinine Democrat pretenses about authoritarianism, treason, insurrection, blah blah blah. |
| Try and get Fairfax school board on the record and vote on keeping the classes and acceleration they have |

Tune in tonight (5/25) at 6:30pm....
Virginia Mathematics Pathways Initiative Community Informational Sessions Tuesday, May 25, 2021 - Advanced Pathways in Grades 11 - 12 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrbxl9wHScrWKWIEoUWNIfQ |
Notes from tonight’s meeting: They are still in “building” phase - proposal won’t be presented until 2022 First draft to BOE 2022 Crosswalk 2024-25 Full implementation 2025-26 Pilots for some new classes start in 2023 School systems can build own courses and allow students to take in any grade (accelerated path) — **this has always been the case** They blocked out grade levels from infographic to avoid confusion ALL upper level classes are still offered Will support AP and IB as do now Foundational Concepts <<<< K-7 Essential Concepts I-II-III <<<< 8-A-G-A Precalculus <<<< Mathematical Analysis Added Data Science II to the list Rest of world thinks it’s weird to break out A-G-A; better to connect concepts Example path of accelerated student (just an example - districts are not restricted to this):
|
| So algebra in middle school is gone? |
If Essential Concepts I-III are going to cover pre-algebra through algebra II, then essential concepts I will have to have some of algebra I (or maybe geometry?) in it, and in that possible pathway option they do have essential concepts I for 7th grade. Sounds like having Algebra I for 7th grade now. Military families would still have to navigate how to transfer those credits on a move, but at least tracking stays in place. Whether they go with some of the other dumb ideas like demphasizing drilling even more remains to be seen. |
They are claiming to stuff four classes into three years, along with modeling, data science, and statistics. This could be done for advanced classes, but they are wanting this for everyone. With an honors vs regular it could be done, but with everyone expected to take the classes, it would be watered down and mostly algebra would be pushed to the Math 9(now essential concepts II). |
Yes, geometry is also in essentials (that’s one main goal - to blend). And algebra 1 topics would be ~8th grade in default track. But schools can accelerate so that can happen in earlier grades for accelerated kids. |
|
The problem is that the normal acceleration is to have algebra 2 in 10th grade. Yes it is faster in LCPS and FCPS, but for most places that's it.
This is also what they are claiming is in their regular classes. So the accelerated kids who aren't super smart in math would no longer be accelerated. By the time they have finished the new classes, they will be hopelessly behind and not ready for precalc and calculus. |
|
Note in the Jay Mathews article, VMPI staff are telling him algebra 2 should be an option in high school- that's where these other classes come in.
Why is it an option, not necessary, if they are claiming it is part of Essential Concepts I,II,III that all students will take in grades 8-10? |
Some kids take this class in middle school. Now it isn't even a graduation requirement? |
| I like the additional math credits for the upper grades. |
They are claiming it will be required for everyone by 10th grade in their new essential concepts I-II-III for grades 8-10, while saying it should be just an option. They can't claim a path to calculus if algebra 2 is not taken by 10th grade. |
