VMPI-ways to speak out

What about DE matrix algebra in 12th? Will that still be available?

Loudoun has. Fairfax hasn't (although like most districts in the DMV they've been trying to reduce the number of 6th and 7th graders taking Algebra I since too many are pushed too early and are unprepared in later years).

If schools still want to offer DE and acceleration to get there, sure. They’ve consistently said DE will still be supported. And now very explicitly say schools can accelerate as much as they want.

Yes, other districts have done this before VPMI.

Evidence for this? People keep pushing the idea that it's a good thing to reduce the number of kids taking Algebra early, but no one ever produces any data showing that the kids who are taking, say, pre-calc in 9th or 10th grade are performing worse than the kids taking it in 11th or 12th.

The watering down takes away advanced math opportunities for many.

It's Inequitable. You can't have some kids doing homework and others not. And besides, all the experts insist it doesn't matter. And to think back in the day, we had math races to learn our math facts. The first one done with correct answers got a prize!

But they are changing the system so there is no path to those advanced classes, unless the kid takes extra math over the summer

Not true.

There will be a path on paper, but in reality extra learning will be needed for these watered down classes.

People complaining about multiple threads on the same topic in every forum. The main thread was deleted, so at least there is still some info still available.

So I have been writing(profusely) to Tina Mazzacone-VA DOE and to my IB school k-12 math coordinator in NOVA regarding this catastrophe. I have a brief meeting with the two of them next week online.

I will concentrate on : the fact that all three levels of IB MATH in grade 11 and 12 (mandatory for the IB diploma), require precalculus (for the HL course) or algebra 2/trig in grade 10(for the SL courses)!!!
As a reminder VMPI does NOT teach algebra 2 nor trig nor precal . SO no one can access algebra 2 until 11th grade per VMPI.

So I want her to chew on that and explain how can VA IB schools continue offering the IB diploma as NO kids will have the knowledge ready for any IB level math--even the one for lib art majors . And as a reminder the IB program is not US based but rather global -not just through Europe but I believe on all continents-so its not like they will have the world participate in this VMPI -we at least not for the next 10-12 years).
-------------------------------------------------------------
SO please write here if you have any other concrete questions that I can ask and so on

thanks

Not just the IB schools but the AP schools even more!! Competitive colleges want to see Calculus in Senior year at tge latest if you want to go into engineering. I'll say it again, Virginia is not preparing these kids for success or even for STEM careers if they implement this! So foolish.

Yep, for those that want to go into engineering. What is that about 5-10% of the student body?

As long as the white and Asian kids are just as unprepared as the Black and Hispanic kids, FCPS will view the program as successful!

Michael Savage was correct when he said Liberalism is a mental disorder. How could any educational professional possibly think this was a good idea? Seriously.

The quoted text above is INCORRECT.

Stop pushing misinformation.
