Agree with a pp - this doc listed as a resource material on the VMPI page is the wonky thing I meant. https://www.mathedleadership.org/docs/resources/positionpapers/NCSMPositionPaper19.pdf But at least two of the webinars I think including the last one had some oral commentary about the evils of tracking. By tracking they mean what we use here. |
| This should be brought up in the governor's race. |
The dems appointed these folks, and were clear when they were elected that dismantling education was their goal. Virginia democrats have become the anti education party as soon as they siezed power. |
No Democrat has stood with fully reopening schools in fall, sadly. The ones in the House of Delegates or state Senate at the last legislative session voted against SB 1303 to a woman or man. They didn't just vote against the emergency clause, they voted against the whole bill. The Ds who voted for the bill (and there were many) aren't running for governor. No D has come out and said (s)he will appoint someone other than Atif as Secretary of Education. These are the areas to press your Ds on, if you are a D. Obviously the Rs will head in a different direction, but it will include things that aren't palatable to most in northern Virginia. |
I don't see the problem. This was how my state was growing up (Ohio). No one took Alg 2 prior to 11th grade. Every student who wanted it went on to college. Kids who wanted more of a challenge did so in clubs and their own time (college classes). Very few kids are truly gifted to the point they need to be on an accelerated track. That's my anecdotal observation. But, also, the observations of AAP teacher friends. |
People cannot have a reasonable conversation with you when you say things like this. Dismantling? Seizing (it's e before i, actually)? No sweetie, that's called voting. |
How does this affect 7th graders? DC is currently in Algebra I Honors.. please explain.. thank you |
Really? I was in high school in Florida in the late 80s/early 90s and took Algebra 2 in 10th grade. And I wasn't a genius or anything. Not taking Alg 2 prior to 11th grade is really a disservice to our kids. They will not be competitive. Do you really want to put our math kids so much behind the curve when it comes to their international peers? That makes zero sense. |
30 years back in Ohio is far different than how education is now. In fcps the smartest kids start algebra in 6th. The only kids taking algebra in 9th with no calculis are the ones who really, really struggle with math. Your memories from 3 decades ago do not align with how schools are today. VA dems want to bring math education standards to a remedial level and to among the lowest in the country, not to mention the world. This is a tremwndous issue. |
The full implementation of this is supposed to occur with the class of 2026. Not sure how they plan to move backwards in the math standards, but that is their goal. |
And there you have it. Anti-progress propaganda by RWNJs. |
Phone typo. Who cares. Who would have thought the dems would become so anti education so quickly? |
Stop politicizing math. This is a broad reform that is nationally in response to the over-acceleration of math in recent decades. AP calculus is a reasonable option for 12th graders with STEM interests. |
It's likely this will not be possible, despite their listing it as an option. Look at the available courses for 11th grade, the prerequisites are not there. Kids who are capable of taking calculus will not be able to because they were held back in middle school and early high school, and only the top kids learning extra classes outside school will be able to take calculus, or at least be ready for it.. |
