I am aware of that argument, I just think it’s interesting that this particular poster asserted they would face a difficult choice and yet had been unwilling to explain why their individual situation is challenging. It was a simple (and sincere) ask, and now I’m coming around to thinking that person might have been lying to advance other interests. As for the extended day situation, doesn’t Claremont already have some set-up where kids can be bused back to their neighborhood schools for extended day because Claremont’s is full with a waiting list? If extended day services are the only barrier for some people, that seems like a pretty easy thing to fix during the transition period, whichever bus would bring non-extended day kids back to the Key neighborhood at the end of the day can add a stop at Key for kids to attend extended day there. |
Where can we find a copy of this map? Is it posted on AEM? Can anyone share here? |

That's a different map. There's also this one, submitted by McKinley in November, that would make Drew basically 110% FRL. https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Suggested-Community-Alternative-Proposal-One.pdf |
I’m talking about this one, which I don’t think moves Long Branch to Fleet, but does give Drew some odd carve-outs of planning units with CAFs: https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Suggested-Community-Alternative-Proposal-One.pdf It still moves Key and ATS, just moves ATS to Nottingham instead of McKinley. I want to know which “better” map keeps Key where it is and moves everything else around it without affecting school demographics (negatively) and/or that doesn’t move walkers to bus riders (because the SB is never going to do that). |
Is McKinley non-contiguous? |
No, it is not. It basically keeps mckinleu’s walk zone and busses everyone else every which way around it to fill both it and Ashlawn. And IGNORES VPI. |
I believe it is, but it’s hard to tell because they did a terrible job with color differentiation. |
If it’s not, then McKinley would be absurdly under capacity. |
| If a family lives in an affordable housing complex it will be managed by AHC or APAH and have its own after school set up. I need to dig up the data on % use of extended day. The bus per am and pm usage alone shows the argument about walkers is either non existent or very very small. |
I'd like to see that "better" map also. If Key feels like its being ignored by the school board, then they should publicize it to the community to see. |
Yes, ironic indeed. They made it clear that they were using the same criteria and data as APS and therefore not considering demographics. So, fine - put them both on the table and let's see which one really is better on the various criteria for a boundary decision. |
Why in the world did they carve out the affordable housing complexes and send them to Drew? Gilliam Place from Fleet to Drew? WTH are these people thinking? |
Spoiler alert - it's only "better" for Key. Everyone else gets hosed. |
They are thinking they want to walk to McKinley. That's it. Nothing else matters. |
