How to fit school days into Gov Larry Hogan's ridiculous policy on school start and stop dates

This thread feels like 22 pages of arguments on whose holidays should be represented. But, if the real question is how do we not lose the 184 days worth of learning then this idea makes some sense. Add 2 minutes to each class period and 1 minute to lunch. It's good to hear a solution brought forward instead of just a bunch of endless complaining.

The question in the subject is posed incorrectly.

It should say: HOW TO FIT SCHOOL TEACHING DAYS INTO THE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND TEACHER UNION's RIDICULOUS POLICIES and the SCHOOL START AND STOP DATES.

Get rid of the fluff days off, teach about them instead. No teacher union prep days. I stopped by one of those once. Since I had to take off of work to care for my kids. Looked like a nonstop catered food social day.

Which "fluff days off", specifically, are you referring to?

I certainly wouldn't call MLK day a 'fluff day' but I love the idea of holding school that day and either doing a teach-in or a required community service day. Similar days (presidents day?) could be handled similarly. However, I think state law requires those days off school.

The Jewish holidays should be the first to go. If it means that much then pull your kids.
Next should be winter break - only need to have Christmas and New Years off. If you want more days pull your kids
Might as well do away with President's Day as well, soon enough that day will go the way of Columbus Day.

Well, I hate that idea. My kid has to do enough SSL hours, so no thanks on more 'required community service'. Often that just ends up being that they have the kids work for free for an organization that is making money.

The school board is asking the governor to allow schools to stay open until June 22.

Fortunately Jack Smith and the school board don't think the schools should be open on the Jewish holidays.

And he's going to say no. I agree with Jeanne Dixon and Michael Durso that this is not an effective approach. Either MCPS has to sue (if they have grounds - IANAL), or they have to lean on the Montgomery County delegation to try to pass some legislation in the General Assembly.

Which money-making organizations give SSL hours?

Then you need to change state law, which requires schools to close between December 24 and January 1.

Agree, if most Fortune 500 companies are open mlk, prez, Columbus days they are fluff days.
Same for those random days off so teachers can organize their life. Those only started within the last 15-20 years around MoCo.

Love how the teachers union lobbied for that.

And here we are. Teachers union paid federal and national and professional holidays versus religious holidays.

State law also requires schools to close on Martin Luther King Day and President's Day.

How do you know this? If you have information about when each of the days was added to the Maryland education article, section 7-103(c)(1), I'd be grateful if you shared it with us.
