To say DCPS wants to make Hardy all WOTP would imply they would accept OOB from the Deal zone, say, as long as there are no OOB from EOTP.

I am certain there are people posting here who feel that way. But I don't think that is the goal of anyone at DCPS.

Not all, but majority WOTP. The DCPS objective since Michelle Rhee has been to flip Hardy into being a "neighborhood" middle school, meaning a significant majority IB enrollment. The Hardy community is not necessarily aligned with that objective.

No, the objective, as stated by Ms Pride at open houses , is a significant majority (75%) feeder school enrollment.

That's a pretty watered down objective, so long as Eaton and Hyde-Addison are overwhelmingly OOB.

Not to mention, the percentage will go up when DCPS coerces a majority OOB school (Eaton) from Deal to Hardy. While many IB families at Eaton are quite upset about the switch, more OOB families take it in stride because Hardy is still a better alternative than if they remained in their neighborhood school feeder pattern.

55% and 59% OOB, respectively, does not OVERWHELMINGLY OOB make.

No school administration is allowed to use IB/OB targets for middle or high schools in a school system based on feeder rights. Ms Pride rightly points to the feeder school community as "her constituency" (but any current enrolled student is part of her students body she cares for regardless of their feeder status).

First, if you are insinuating that Eaton is an inferior school due to its OOB population then you are sadly mistaken. We are an IB family at Eaton and the "Eaton Community" benefits just as much from its OOB families as it IB families. Second, not all IB families are upset. We look forward to Hardy and think that its size is much better suited for our children.

A virtue of Hardy may be its smaller size. But to be blunt, the IB parents I know feel that going from Deal to Hardy is like going from steak to Hamburger Helper. A number of Eaton OOB parents don’t care because they live in certain “Bowser base” neighborhoods EOTP that the mayor took care of through long-term independent geographical rights to Deal. So they get Eaton OOB and then snap back to their neighborhood rights to Deal. Eaton IB families have no such protection.

I don't go to Eaton or Hardy, but am so sick of this ridiculous canard. The majority of Ward 4 was rezoned to MacFarland, in Ward 4. If you're talking about Shepherd Park, they have always been IB for Deal and the decision to keep them there in this last round of boundary drawing was made before Bowser was mayor. But more than that, most of the kids who live in Shepherd Park go private or they go to Shepherd, not Eaton.

But, oh! Maybe you're talking about those undesirables from Mt. pleasant. They live in Ward 1.

So you think you're above Hardy. By all means, apply to be (gasp!) OOB somewhere else. I doubt you'd be missed.

It is a fact that there is no 'E' in 'JKLM.'

Such gratuitously nasty people. Good grief.

Only JKLM parents still think it's ONLY JKLM. Nobody cares anymore. Especially since R has better scores than most. Many people prefer EHROSS of some JKLM.

Eaton is awesome. Don't think there is any school quite like it. It's a one of a kind place. There are parents IB and OOB would could afford to send their kids to any private school in the city but choose Eaton and are totally devoted to the school. Eaton has a worldly, sophisticated, diverse bunch of families. Great teachers. Smart kids.

Eaton is a good school. But I don't think it's a great school yet. It has more work to do to get to the level of Mann and Janney.

Unfortunately, the loss of Deal may hurt Eaton with attracting more IB families, more of whom will look for stronger middle school alternatives (private, charter) to Hardy. I know of several families in the Eaton IB area who now are trying mightily to get into nearby Hearst, which still has the coveted feed to Deal.

I think some Eaton families have used proximity preference to get into Hearst.

Shepherd Park has not "always been IB for Deal." They fed Paul until it went charter in 2000.

I know a lot of Eaton families with kids in the younger grades who are planning on Hardy and look forward to its smaller size (as compared to Deal). These are committed and involved families.

There are real estate listings north of Quebec St in Cleveland Park that are specifying "Deal district." So the real estate market is now factoring feeding to Deal vs Hardy as a value differentiator in home sales.
