That is key (no pun intended). They need to continue to build out sports and other extracurriculars and make a priority getting some scheduled access to Jelleff field across the street.

So the deal with Jelleff is that in 2010 the Maret School put in $2.5 million in exchange for exclusive use of the field until 5:30 on weekdays, spring and fall, and certain Saturdays. That deal started in spring of 2010 and will end in the fall of 2019. Which is only four years away.

Presumably Maret is going to try and renew the deal. If you at a Hardy feeder and are considering Hardy it is very much in your interest to insure that this deal is not renewed. This is particularly true if your child is in fourth grade or below and will be in middle school after the fall of 2019. Having this facility across the street would be a huge amenity for Hardy. Normally under DC law DCPS teams have the highest priority for using DPR facilities. The Maret deal required that the DC Council make a special exemption, any renewal will require council approval as well.

It's not too early to start raising the issue with your elected officials.

Yes, thanks for the suggestion. But please make sure you pass on the right information: Maret's exclusive use is only from 3:30 to 5:30 on weekdays (not for all day until 5:30 as you message seemed to indicate).

Wow - Maret is paying about $250K per year to use those fields two hours a day?

Correct. Hardy could start using the field now during the day for PE if they wanted to.

You can belittle all this, but just like strong academics, activities and sports (beyond basketball and football) matter to IB parents. In the past they have looked at Hardy's offerings compared to Deal's and asked "WTF?"

If Hardy wants to attract more IB students, then it needs to be responsive to what its "market" wants. Clearly, there are still those in the Hardy community who are ambivalent at best about attracting more IB students.
Oh no, here it comes again.

Why doesn't the PTA at least bring the uniform question to a vote? Or let the kids decide for themselves?

Nobody said anything about uniforms until you brought it up. Go back to trying to figure out how many IB kids are really at Hardy this year.

I remember reading here a few years ago that there was a vote, and it was in favor to the uniform.

In fairness to Maret, they helped to pay for a renovation when DC did not have the means or wherewithal to do it themselves. Everyone who uses Jellefff should be grateful to Maret for that. That said, the lease should not be renewed without modifying it, when the current term expires.

That was in the old Hardy era. It's time for reconsideration.
