Maybe I'm confused, but I thought this thread was discussing Asian suing Harvard and UNC for use of quotas -- how did the rape at UVA come into it? Are Asians troubled by quotas there as well?
Actually, there is a suspicion that UVA has a quota on Asian Americans as well based on how number of acceptances from TJ decreased in line with increase in Asian American students at TJ for the past 5 years.[/quote] It's all a big conspiracy -- except it's probably not. Despite the volume of TJ kids who go there, UVA is not an extension of TJ, and getting into TJ is not supposed to be a guarantee of getting into UVA. Perhaps fewer TJ kids appeared like they might be a good fit for UVA, or that they might actually go there. Perhaps, TJ was hurt for the same reason many NOVA kids have been denied admission -- there are just too many smart kids up here and UVA has to take a certain proportion of kids from the whole state. Why should there be a quota for NOVA kids, but not for TJ? Times change and with the rise in population the number of brilliant kids in NOVA who aren't at TJ (and aren't Asian) is on the rise too. I don't think UVA is in the business of turning away kids it really wants to have and thinks will add something to the campus community however that is defined in a particular year. One other thing: don't forget Asian Americans also compete against overseas Asians who pay full fare -- as do all students for that matter. I'd have a bigger beef against kids who can barely handle the language taking a spot, but with economics the way they are, get used to it. Intense competition from everywhere is going to be a fact of life at nationally recognized universities in a global world. Perhaps TJ kids who were praising the value of failure to kids who didn't get into TJ in a recent article, can take what they say to heart. Getting into all these colleges is tough, period. Rather than spending all this time trying to change admission rules to what suits a particular group, why don't people concentrate on making themselves the best they can possibly be and let their brilliance make another school great?
