At DC privates - Why are VA parents considered "inferior"?

Anonymous
I'm starting a new thread. Why are DC parents at DC privates such pompous assholes?

NOVA=NJ burbs

Rightly or wrongly, factual or not, it is so.

There is one flaw in your premise. Washington, D.C. is not even close to being socially in the same league as NYC. Until 30 years ago most foreign diplomats considered Washington, D.C. to be hardship duty; perhaps some still do. New York is cosmopolitan, diverse, and exciting. New York has real money, old money, and university libraries named after their some of their resident's great-grandfathers. Washington, D.C., has clerks, chump change and a hand-full of first generation Ivies. In Washington, D.C., last week's pay check is considered to be "old money". NYC has Broadway Theater with real stagecraft, and hundreds of top tier restaurants. Washington, D.C., has second string road shows that make to the National Theather after they've played the Orpheum in Baltimore. Congratulations to the many Washingtonians who have recently just squeaked into the lower-upper class. Now that's an accomplishment for which you must be very proud.

Thank you, but please let me correct your equation.

NYC=London, Paris, Rome
D.C.=Peoria, Illinois

New York has theatre and better restaurants, fashion , and art

DC offers access to law makers. Some people need that access ( both foreign countries and corporations) New York cannot provide that. In DC that can happen all in one place.

I've lived in DC, Maryland, Old Town Alexandria, and a Virginia suburb. Old Town wins hands down as the best lifestyle. None of the others are a close second. I'm still considering DC schools when dc is old enough! Though. I work in DC and distance from my office will be an important factor. But no interest in living in DC.

For the record, we live in Virginia because our careers are in Virginia. No social climbing was attempted, DC attended a nice, but non-prestigous upper NW private high school, so we were really surprised at the snooty attitude and assumptions made about us.

We don't like our local public schools and the emphasis on silly testing, we found a nice private for K-8 in Virginia, but for high school there was no suburban fit. So it was into the district DC commuted.

As a transplant, and a die hard liberal, I do not have a lot of love or loyalty for NOVA, but we have bloomed where we were planted (not a mcmansion) and find the snobbery both silly and sad.

I love it! A "did hard liberal" who abandons public schools. I live in VA too, and I like it. I don't get where people come off thinking hat where one lives, goes to school, etc. has anything to do with social climbing, etc. However, I am happy to live in VA, have Congressional representation and have my representative legislate for DC residents.

I disagree with the accusation that we abandoned public schools. I fully support the institution of public schools. I fully support, in theory and in action, my taxes paying for publics schools and would never advocate a voucher system. It just so happened that our local public school system was not a fit for my child and I was not willing to sacrifice her education just to "prove" I support pubic schools.

NYC= London, Paris, Tokyo
DC= Toronto, Kuala Lumpur, Sao Paolo, Moscow

Let's use objective measures, like the GaWC Global Cities Index.

DC certainly isn't NYC. However, the NY/NJ/Conn analogy to DC/VA/MD still applies.

Sure, and Newark is just like Alexandria.

The only thing correct about that analogy is that Ct and Md are both to the north of the city, and Nj and Va to the south.

Ah that old comparison of dc to NYC and nova to jersey. It is laughable how dc residents consider themselves cosmopolitan city dwellers. I don't even consider dc a city. It is just a cheesier, less safe, less dynamic, poorer little step sibling (if even part of the same family) of New York. It is filled with people who consider bread and chocolate the height of bakery sophistication. Nightlife consists of bars filled with cheesy 20 something hill interns consuming alcohol in excess. Cabs are hard to come by. The subway doesn't operate late at night. People wear tevas and ann taylor and lily pullitzer. Sound familiar? I'll give you a hint. Rhymes with "schmooshmersey."

Nearly everyone i know who moved to the area from manhattan settled in nova (with some in Bethesda). We came here disillusioned by the sad offerings in DC and figured as long as we were out of the (real) city, might as well get the benefits of the close in burbs. More space, feeling safe, able to drive nice cars, send our kids to good schools, be close to good shopping and conveniences.

Signed,
Someone who moved from manhattan (and was a bridge and tunnel snob), moved to dc, and fled to nova.

Well, NYC and DC have rats!

McLean has rats - I have seen them around my hood. Still, having lived in DC, MD, and VA for many years, VA is the best. MD is full of snotty wanna-bes, who literally think running over you to get the parking space they deserve is appropriate conduct. DC is full of public officials accused of (and often convicted of) crimes. VA is civil, full of parks, has the best athletes and athletic facilities, and the best public school in the area (TJ), and the lowest tax rate. So VA it is. I could not care less if anyone at my DC's private thinks less because we are in VA. Have at it. The less people we have in VA, the better it is, in my view.
