It's the Secretary of defense. If it's always a general or other top rank in that position, maybe it's important to have a skilled politician that also achieved a top rank in that role.

This. You need someone with political skill in that role because it's highly political and he has to hold his own with the President and politicians in Congress.

For the record, Trump appointed Hegseth for two reasons: he will be loyal to Trump and he "looks the part" (according to Trump). This is not some effort to upend tradition by putting a rank and file officer in the role. This is not a principled choice. It's idiotic.

But we aren’t supposed to think there is any racism or sexism involved in this management style.

If anything, it’s just that our adversaries will fear the square jaw man with the scary tattoos, so we need him because of their irrational biases.

The reactions from key GOP Senators as well as members of the House Armed Services Committee have been extremely telling.

However, literally as I type this, GOP congressional delegations are meeting to select new leadership. There is no question to me that one reason Trump announced so many of his major appointments last night is that he is leaning heavily on everyone running to replace McConnell to guarantee his appointments are going to get through. But this is the one appointment he's made that I think poses a real problem if they go through a normal Senate confirmation process. Rick Scott is on Armed Services. I guarantee there are some heated conversations being had right now between Trump's team and perhaps Trump himself, and the three senators running for leader (Scott, Cornyn, Thune) about this specific nomination. There will be senators difficult to corral on this one.

No there won't be. Mainstream Republicans count on Dem outrage and intransigience to provide cover. But after the electoral shellacking that's not an option. None of them have the guts to do or say anything and the ones that did, besides Murkowski, have all left government. Lisa's not doing anything because she's worried about the Energy nominee and has no leverage because of the Senate results.

I'd say too bad so sad but I know that most Colonels and above didn't vote for him. This is the first FAFO moment I feel sorry about.

This will be interesting for the GOP. A real moment of reckoning without the dems to rely on. Will they find a spine? I’m not holding my breath.
