Please do that for me. I don't have time to go through the exercise. I am genuinely interested.

How would you know the top 10% at these school to compare the college destinations?

Many going to top 20 schools on their own merits (as well as some recruits). It is not as lopsided as Prep, which seems to only get athletes and wealthy Chinese students into the top schools. Quite disappointing.

Well, if getting your son into a top school is your number one overarching priority, then Prep would not be the place for your family. Thank goodness there are other schools for you to choose from.

The families that do choose Prep seem to have a different (and maybe broader) set of objectives and expectations.

I can assure you that the Prep parents are almost universally pleased with the colleges their sons move on to after Prep.

Well we chose our Catholic HS for the excellent curriculum and focus on service and Catholic faith. The great college my kid got into was due to his hard work, and perhaps the fact he did so well in a school with a challenging curriculum. I don't know why this isn't the outcome for Prep students.

What HS did your son attend? You protest a bit much.

My son attended Gonzaga and went on to Notre Dame. A good number of non-athlete, non legacy GZ students also were admitted to ND that year. Not seeing much action with ND at Prep these days. That is problematic for what is supposed to be a top a Catholic HS that used to send many boys to ND as well as other top 20 schools.

So that’s the reason for your “disappointment” with the schools GP grads went to? Not enough, in your judgement, went to Notre Dame?

ND is a great school, but not everyone is enthralled with it.

One of our son’s was recruited by ND for lacrosse. After his official visit he cooled on the school. His reason was that he didn’t think he could ever muster the level enthusiasm for any school that ND seemed to inspire/require. It seemed “cult-like” to him.

GP not sending many boys to ND, isn’t “problematic” at all, just because you say it is.

Both send a fair share to Jesuit schools. Prep sends more kids to Georgetown, and also to Notre Dame. Yes, Gonzaga sends some to Notre Dame and also many to Fairfield.

Prep sends more to top 10 schools like Princeton, Hopkins, etc.

Ha. It’s not true anyway. And we are talking 10 kids only top 10% at prep and 25 kids at GZ.

So far there are five Prep seniors listed who are going to Notre Dame and I am sure there are more to come. I also know multiple students turned down ND for other schools like UVA, etc. Not everyone one wants to go to the school you or others may consider more highly ranked. Lots of kids aren’t interested in Ivies or want to go to school to play a sport or major in a particular field that may not be at a highly ranked school. Other kids may be going for schools that offer the most merit. You really have no idea why these kids pick the schools they pick.

Many Prep students are turning down Notre Dame for schools like: Georgetown (if they want Jesuit roots), Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Grinell, Westpoint, etc

And some boys pick Notre Dame over UCLA or Boston College over UC Santa Barbara or Boston College over Georgetown. Some kids may have made the opposite decision if given the choice. You just never know what they want or are looking for. It's their choice and should be.

This is true. I know two GP students (brothers) who were accepted at ND, but also recieved Jeffersonian Scholarships to UVA. That's a full ride plus stipend scholarship. ND didn't have a chance.

In my experience, it’s the Gonzaga parents who have this problem. Rarely are they native to the area or alums of
GZA, so they don’t “get it”.

At least for the residents of MD and DC, this is one Catholic community served by two schools plus St Johns.

At a point after high school graduation the alums go back to being one community. The rivalry between even these “brother” schools evaporates.

The GZA parents newer to the area have a problem grasping this and are reacting to the more sumptuous Prep campus.

In 23 pages, has anyone given examples of the supposed wow factors?

The list of Jefferson Scholars was published yesterday. There is not one from GP, so there is no way two brothers from GP were both named Jeff Scholars. There is one from STA. Maybe the boys you know are Echols Scholars, still an honor but does not include a scholarship, full ride or otherwise.

This whole back and forth is troubling. Who is searching back and forth? Wow.
Anonymous
^ I posted the Jeff Scholars list and did not have to do any searching. I have a kid that goes to UVA and the school sent it out yesterday, so I had just seen it.
Anonymous
oh wow. That STA kid is a crazily impressive person. This makes a lot of sense.
