No, it was just the one. They have not found a gun in the other incident. OTOH, due to the incidences, RM has upped it's security, got another security guard and the CEO has stated that they will spend more time at RM. FWIW, My DD has anxiety and scares easily (still doesn't like to be home alone in the evening), and she is fine with RM. |
Here you go OP. A parent who lives in Wootton but has a child at RM. The rest of the posts (myself included) are meaningless because most of us don't have kids in both clusters. This PP does. |
I agree it’s mostly fine, although the bathroom situation is not great. But I wouldn’t discount the second gun. A kid saw it. The school admitted that they saw photos of someone with what appeared to be a gun. The kid ran off into the woods to evade the police so the fact that they didn’t find a gun says nothing. He probably hid it in the woods and will go back to it. (Note that the cop didn’t pursue into the woods because he was the only one on scene — he called for backup to circulate around looking for the kid.). I think the safety is equivalent to any other urban HS in the world we live in. |
We’re at RM now and so far so good. The recent incidents there were concerning but the administration appears to be on top of it. But we’re watching it closely and will voice concerns—as will lots of families—if we feel things aren’t being handled well. We’ve known lots of kids who have gone through RM and done very well. Some were in the IB, others were not but took advantage of the honors and AP classes the school has to offer. They also have lots of activities beyond sports for students to get involved in. The dramatic arts—aka Black Maskers—is a great group of kids that puts on very good performances. I also have to disagree with PP about JW. It’s a great school. The principal does a great job of leading the school and setting the tone. And they have many great teachers—some have been there a long time. We loved our time there. |
Hard to give to much credence to that poster when they say have “Wooten” as their base school. Doesn’t quite suggest they really know enough about the school to compare it to RM. |
This made me laugh. And even if the person actually has someone in the Wootton cluster, they didn't go to Wootton because they went into the IB program. But yes, a troll for sure. |
You slightly had me until here. I have never heard anyone say JW is a great school and the principal isn't even there this year |
Well you’re hearing (or reading it) here. And I’ve spoken with a lot of people over the years who agree. Certainly, reasonable minds can disagree and no place is perfect. But overall we were very pleased with our experience at JW. |
|
We have one in elementary in RM cluster and on in JW. Happy with how things are going.

Went to JW orientation, and principal had recorded message. Where is the principal? |
Another school for the year. There is an interim principal and it’s like lord of the flies this year. Worse than I have ever seen and 3rd kid going thru |
Even when I was in public school 30 years ago you made every effort to not use the school bathrooms. |
He does this every year. I have not seen a Principal who is MIA that much in all my 10 yrs in MCPS. It's no wonder he's disengaged at JW. |
That's right.. it says "nothing, either way. "Appeared to be" is not the same as "is", and kids are known to exaggerate and gossip, like parents, apparently. |
