Well Same as any other school. It's safe but a few posters are trying to hype incidents at every school lately o lobby for prison guards aka SROs. The county got rid of them because the research showed they weren't effective

More like politics. Please cite this ‘research’.

There was 2 incidents of loaded guns on RM campus in less than 2 days. I don’t think anyone is hyping anything up. It’s scary

No, it was just the one. They have not found a gun in the other incident.

OTOH, due to the incidences, RM has upped it's security, got another security guard and the CEO has stated that they will spend more time at RM.

FWIW, My DD has anxiety and scares easily (still doesn't like to be home alone in the evening), and she is fine with RM.

Well there have been multiple events with staff and students over the years. A few staff arrests. The under the 2nd floor steps sex scene posted of facebook live by an 18yr old "freshman" immigrant and a 14yr old. Multiple sexual assaults, and few drug overdoses (at least 2 this year in school) and the drug sales and partaking in the bathrooms. The known avoidance of the 3rd floor bathroom. A lot of fights and bullying and yes, wonderful diversity but these kids rarely mix unless it is for sports. The IB kids mix with no one, so it is basically JW kids entering a slightly larger school. So if you hate JW, you will hate RM.

Not true.

My IB kid has non IB friends.

JWMS sucked.

RMHS is much better, both my kids have stated this.

Also there are several former JWMS kids in IB magnet.

I have not heard of the OD in school this year. Where did you get that?

Both schools have a strong academic opportunities, but I would say RM goes above and beyond because of the extensive IB offerings. My younger child is currently in their junior year of the IB program and has really enjoyed it. Our base school is Wooten fwiw.

Here you go OP. A parent who lives in Wootton but has a child at RM. The rest of the posts (myself included) are meaningless because most of us don't have kids in both clusters. This PP does.

I agree it’s mostly fine, although the bathroom situation is not great. But I wouldn’t discount the second gun. A kid saw it. The school admitted that they saw photos of someone with what appeared to be a gun. The kid ran off into the woods to evade the police so the fact that they didn’t find a gun says nothing. He probably hid it in the woods and will go back to it. (Note that the cop didn’t pursue into the woods because he was the only one on scene — he called for backup to circulate around looking for the kid.).
I think the safety is equivalent to any other urban HS in the world we live in.

RM is JW and IB kids. JW is a terrible middle school and once you get into RM, the IB kids keep to themselves. So many discipline issues at RM. Vaping, drugs, overdoses, fights, sex, sexual assaults, and now guns on campus 2 incidents 10 days apart.

Wootton has Frost and part of Cabin John. No IB but so many high course offerings as the school is competitively smart. The administration is good and the its a very involved school. the negatives is it is pretty high pressure like the IB program and the school isn't as new and nice as RM. And parking is the worst.

But when the kids on the team talk, Wootton kids jaws drop when they hear what typical RM days are like and it's gotten worse every year. I don't hate the school. I love the diversity and school spirit, but it isn't a school to be that proud of. Without IB it is basically Rockville High School.

We’re at RM now and so far so good. The recent incidents there were concerning but the administration appears to be on top of it. But we’re watching it closely and will voice concerns—as will lots of families—if we feel things aren’t being handled well. We’ve known lots of kids who have gone through RM and done very well. Some were in the IB, others were not but took advantage of the honors and AP classes the school has to offer. They also have lots of activities beyond sports for students to get involved in. The dramatic arts—aka Black Maskers—is a great group of kids that puts on very good performances.

I also have to disagree with PP about JW. It’s a great school. The principal does a great job of leading the school and setting the tone. And they have many great teachers—some have been there a long time. We loved our time there.

Hard to give to much credence to that poster when they say have “Wooten” as their base school. Doesn’t quite suggest they really know enough about the school to compare it to RM.

This made me laugh. And even if the person actually has someone in the Wootton cluster, they didn't go to Wootton because they went into the IB program. But yes, a troll for sure.

Well you’re hearing (or reading it) here. And I’ve spoken with a lot of people over the years who agree. Certainly, reasonable minds can disagree and no place is perfect. But overall we were very pleased with our experience at JW.

We have one in elementary in RM cluster and on in JW. Happy with how things are going.

Even when I was in public school 30 years ago you made every effort to not use the school bathrooms.

He does this every year. I have not seen a Principal who is MIA that much in all my 10 yrs in MCPS. It's no wonder he's disengaged at JW.

That's right.. it says "nothing, either way. "Appeared to be" is not the same as "is", and kids are known to exaggerate and gossip, like parents, apparently.
