And were they eating the dad who died?

Yes, I think that was the subtext. When they leave the compound to “look for food” or “go hunt,” they actually kill people they find and use them for food. They won’t waste a dead body, even from their own community.

This episode was grisly.

Do we think Joel may have eaten other humans in the past with his brother in order to remain alive?

So the group that first saw Joel/Ellie earlier was probably hunting them for food? Hadn’t thought of that.

Neither had I, nor had I considered that they were eating the girl’s dad. Gross gross gross.

Oh yeah -- that adds some context to the leader saying they couldn't bury the girl's dad because the ground was too hard. I mean, it probably was; but also if he's hanging in the meat storage room, you're probably not going to want an open casket ceremony.

And no one questioned where the body was to be kept for months before spring came? It’s not like they have people building caskets and no casket store. Who wouldn’t question this? Bc the family would have wanted to pay respects…

Just.go.with.it. This is fiction, not a documentary.

(Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are terrific in their respective roles, but I have a soft spot for the leads from the game)

Wait - I just looked him up. Did he play Joel in the game? Very cool! Kind of makes me wonder why he didn't play Joel in this show - even though I do love Pedro Pascal.

Are you serious? Because its the lead and for the lead you need a known, famous, leading actor, not a complete unknown who only otherwise does voice work.

Oh. I'm sorry. Thank you for setting me straight. Interestingly, I had no idea who Pedro Pascal was before this show, and now I do. See how that works?

Well it sounds like you've been living under a rock then, because Pedro Pascal is huge. Game of Thrones, The Mandelorian, Narcos, etc etc
Maybe you're new to watching TV or maybe you're just old.

Not PP, but I'm curious what prompted you to respond this way. Seriously, what were you thinking?

NP here - the PP was probably responding to the “see how that works?” know it all tone. But that PP played his or herself - Pedro Pascal is a massive TV and a rising movie star so the “gotcha” didn’t work.

And the “see how that works” was a direct response to the snarky, “Are you serious?” from the PP in bold. Maybe don’t start a snotty post and expect someone won’t respond in kind.

Interesting. I didn't read a lot of tone in that. If I were to read tone into that, I would certainly also read it into the one that responds to..."Are you serious?" And I'm not sure I would say "massive star" for Pedro. I knew him from GoT and that is it. (Though I do love him.) Why would anyone assume that PP legitimately did not recognize him? What, it is more likely that they did recognize him and pretended they didn't?

Exactly this.

The episode shows that it’s supposed to take place in Lake City, CO. This town is infamous for an act of cannibalism in real life:

In 1875, Lake City gained notoriety when Alferd Packer was charged with murder and cannibalism. Due to the nature of the crime, it was sensationalized and gained national attention. There are several differing accounts of the story, but according to one account Packer was acting as a guide for a party of five men prospecting in the San Juan Mountains when they became snowbound for the winter.

When he eventually came out of the mountains in the spring, he said the miners had abandoned him and he had nearly starved. However, because he looked surprisingly healthy and first asked for whiskey rather than food, suspicions began to arise. Five bodies that showed signs of cannibalism were found southeast of Lake City at the foot of Slumgullion Pass, and Packer was arrested and held in the Saguache jail, but escaped. He fled to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he remained until 1883 when he was again arrested and brought to Lake City for trial. He was convicted of killing one of the five men and sentenced to be hanged. The Colorado Supreme Court reversed the conviction in 1885, but the following year Packer was retried, convicted again, and sentenced to 40 years. He was paroled and released in 1901.[10]

The Hinsdale County Museum, in downtown Lake City, hosts the most extensive collection of Packer memorabilia known, including a skull fragment from one of his victims, a pair of shackles used on Alferd when he was in the Lake City jail, a number of buttons from the clothes of the five men he eventually ate, and dolls and the dollhouse Packer built while in the Lake City Jail.[18][19] The area where the bodies were discovered is now known as Cannibal Plateau.[20] Packer is remembered by holding an annual Alferd Packer Jeep Tour and Barbecue.[20] The cafeteria in the University of Colorado, Boulder student union is called the Alferd Packer Memorial Grill.[18][20]

We get a hint that David is not what he says he is when the widow serves him a full plate of dinner, while everyone else has a ladleful in a bowl. The injustice of this scene communicates that he is using his position for personal gain and that the rest of the community somehow has bought into his tyranny.

FUN FACT: There is a cafeteria at the University of Colorado in Boulder named after Alferd Packer. They like their little jokes!

Seriously? That’s hilarious, if true.

Any of the millions of people who didn't watch the Mandalorian or Narcos. I barely recognized him from GoT, but couldn't tell you his name before a couple weeks ago.

I am old (51) and have no idea how people don't know him. He spans the genres and generations with his work. And that voice...

Yep, same here. I had never heard of him prior to this show, and I watch a lot of TV - just not the shows he happened to be in.
