How far away do you need to be from DC to be safe from a nuclear attack?

You’re going to have to survive with a bunch of MAGA lunatics running around. Good luck.

The MAGA people I see around me are all decent, capable, law abiding family people. I don't agree with their politics but some of you have a very warped perspective of Trump voters in flyover.

Nope. Hi, Trumper! Let me guess, anonymous board so you “voted for Biden.” Suuuuuuure you did.

+1 and I am not a Trumper

+1 and not a Trumper either, but people like the PP above NEED to brand people who support MAGA as lunatics so it can justify their own vicious hatefulness. Makes them feel good about themselves.

Nope. MAGA actions speak for themselves.

The actions of those that would prefer American not to be great are pretty clear.

The Trumper idea of what a “great America” looks like is an abject joke. They are willfully ignorant, reactionary, deluded, selfish morons.

If there’s ever an all out nuclear exchange, then I’ll have about 15 minutes to paint a big bullseye on my roof. I don’t want to live through that.

This is “funny” because it assumes a nuclear strike would only occur in the city.

An all out nuclear exchange would guarantee lots of targets beyond DC and the Pentagon: Ft. Meade, Andrews, Annapolis, Dover, Pax River, Dahlgren, Quantico, Ft. Belvoir, Mt. Weather, maybe Camp David for starters.

How far away from DC would be safe from a nuclear bomb? Are we taking like a few miles, like silver spring, or dozens of miles, like Gaithersburg or somewhere in Virginia. Would like to stay in MD if possible.

You will never be able to escape the radioactive fall-out, no matter how far away you are in the DMV area.

I live in MD, so I can vote my conscience. I wrote in Bernie (again), because the party shafted him (again). Given the hypothetical choice right now between Joe Biden and Trump, I’d now prefer to have Trump. I’m sorry that angers you but that’s how I feel. At this point I’m definitely willing to admit that I felt safer during Trump.

A few pages back someone posted a video from HBO news with one of the world’s leading nuclear experts.

Nuclear war involving Russia and the U.S. is “the end of civilization.” Not the end of Glover Park or Capitol Hill. Civilization. You can drive to west virginia all you want; you’ll die in west virginia.

Russian nukes aren’t likely. Like trump, putin is a lot of ego bluster with a lot of (relatively) small ego goals—some land, some oil, something resembling clout for getting land and oil. And if I’m wrong, I’ll be dead along with the rest of you.

Feel however you want to feel, but you must not know much about the relationship between impulsivity and annihilation. The two are related. Even the worst descriptions of biden don’t include personality traits that are most worrisome with nukes. Trump’s personality is basically the top ten list of things you don’t want anywhere near something like this. Again, though, feel your feelings.

All you paranoid folk must know nothing about nuclear war!!

Mutually Assured Destruction means just that. No one will survive. The planet will not survive. Everything and everyone on the planet will die.

The only "safe" place to be is on the Space Station, but even then, you could never come back to Earth.

Putin likes to make threats. You've heard his hyperbole, right? Calling the Ukrainian government (headed by a Jewish president) Nazis and drug addicts?

Putin has children, believe it or not. There are people on the planet he cares about. He does not want his country annihilated. He wants to expand Russia's territory and return to the glory days of the USSR. He does not want to blow up Russia. That is not in his plans. Blowing up any part of Europe would destroy Russia also, which he doesn't want to do.

Calm down. Eat some ice cream. Watch a movie.

BTW I have a supply of potassium iodide in my medicine cabinet. I bought it about a decade ago (it's likely expired) when there was concern about a nuclear power plant accident. That's a much more real threat than Putin launching nuclear weapons, which he categorically will not do. Of if he does, he'll launch them into the ocean or in the middle of Siberia. He wants power and land. Nuclear war will give him neither.

Ice cream. Snacks. Netflix. Naps.

You are behind on your nuclear strategy and game theory. The question is whether going nuclear to deescalate is a real strategy. In other words, would a the Russians think that an attack on a mid-sized US city actually be a way to end this crisis. It is a scary thought.

Sure, “safer,” meaning trump would just let Putin take over whatever country he wants, including ours

But other parts of the US must be targets too, right? Would he start with DC? Or another city? Silicon Valley? New York?

Sorry, but that’s just not true. Lots of people will still survive. The planet will absolutely survive. The most dangerous radioactive materials in fallout are essentially gone after about 4-8 weeks. A few types of long lasting isotopes will remain but they aren’t nearly as radioactive as the other materials in fallout. You can read about this stuff on wiki. I did a lot of reading about this stuff last night. The radiation is very high in the first few days, then starts to reduce quickly. There’s a mathematical formula for it called the 7-10 rule. Google it.
