And she was doing it while she was also married, so that's just fabulous. What a role model, she's like a forerunner for Wonder Woman or something.

And yeah. Obviously she's going to get treated "like a second-class citizen for years" - because that's what a mistress is. A mistress is not a wife. That's also why she took the backseat and avoided the limelight, by the way. Not because she's some humble Mother Theresa, but because she's savvy about PR and she knows the public won't be thrilled that Charles' aggressive, possessive side piece - the same side piece who bullied Diana during Diana's entire marriage - is now flaunting her jewels and her man. Plus, she was already an old woman by the time she married Charles. Would be in very bad taste for an aging mistress-turned-wife to now act the princess when Kate Middleton was already around to take that role.

Because she didn’t have her lover the day she got married or buy them gifts, unlike Charles.

That was the least of it. Queen Ho was stalking Diana from well before her wedding. This is the year of her engagement. I can't imagine being 19, newly married and pregnant on top of it, then as a I slowly age into 24/25 realizing that the woman you thought was just being friendly and showing you 'the ropes' actually was your husband's decade-long mistress, everyone knew about it, maybe the entire ton was snickering behind the teen girl's back, and then when you confront your husband - he not only tells you to f off but also makes it clear Camilla is here to stay and you will be attending dinner parties at her home to keep it from 'looking weird'.

The nerve of that manipulative POS and his homewrecking piece of trash.

(Prince Albert is the only one I can think of where I’ve never heard of it.). Isn’t it different if that’s a cultural norm, like old school Mormans with multiple wives, Muslims with multiple wives, etc.? It sort of seems like Camilla was a little surprised that Diana was surprised by all of this. Diana grew up in the royal ambit—it’s really unclear why she would have expected fidelity. I think she drank the koolaid the BRF was selling about the storybook romance, and no one in the BRF expected that.

I wouldn’t be chums with Camilla but she does seem like she was playing by the age old rules for the royals—discreet and discrete paramours are accepted and expected. I suspect Kate knows that, and Elizabeth certainly did as well.

Albert of Monaco?
Not PP but I think she meant Victoria’s husband.

Albert didn't cheat because Victoria was a sex addict. From her letters,
it seems that she couldn't get enough of him.

If she found jewelry meant for Camilla before the wedding, then she surely didn’t think Camilla was just being friendly. Their relationship history was well known .

Charles was probably counseled to keep Camila as a mistress since the Crown wouldn't allow them to marry. It was a norm. He was simply too arrogant and unfeeling about keeping it much more discrete--both from Diana and the public.

Diana found out about Camilla shortly before the wedding. She was shattered. She went to her family to ask their support and advice on how to proceed. Remember, she was a 19 year old girl, worked with preschoolers, probably very naive. Her family pushed her to go through with the wedding, maybe bullied her a bit. They were very high born (remember, tradition has really worn thin but at that time these things still mattered), but marrying the future king of England would still provide cachet to the family. She was probably trusting her family to not lead her wrong, plus she was confused, etc. She did write an autobiography, where she describes how she found out about Camilla, her feelings, why she didn't break off the engagement. In the book she states Camilla was very harsh with her.

Diana has been dead 25 years. Why are people rehashing these details like they just happened? It’s well past time to move on and most people have. The queen didn’t make her announcement expecting much backlash. She had a sense people would accept it.

You're right - she's been dead for 25 years, and the world HAS moved on. But the world has long memories for details like this one. I could care less about Charles and Camilla. But I do remember a beautiful young woman who was mistreated and didn't have the tools to handle the hot mess she was thrown into.

Her sisters did not care two figs about Diana. She cleaned one of their houses and clearly coukd support herself. Rather than divide what little money the family had left, they happily threw Diana to a wealthy family so she would be no financial drain. This is what totals did with women for centuries. Prince Philip’s own sisters were married off as soon as reasonable

Diana’s family basically live iff the income stream created by Diana’s fame, particularly her brother. She took one for the team but they did not tell her

We have no idea how these women felt. Camilla didn’t seem to mind that her husband was cheating.

And that may be but now he is trying to rewrite history and cast himself as a romantic hero unable to give up his true love. Camilla dated him met someone more appealing and then married that person. Charles was not a virgin until he got married at 30. He was dating multiple women at once and Camilla was at many times one of many. The whole thing with him pretending he never said Camilla would be known as Princess Consort is more of the same arrogance. He and Andrew clearly think that there position lets them say the sky is green and the little people should just believe it.

Ok, but that was then and this is now. The public is ready for Camilla as Queen Consort. Her image has been overhauled all these years. Diana's wedding was 40 years ago. You must be pretty old to remember all that so clearly and still be hung up on it.

Lol right every woman in Britain is ok with cheating except poor Diana.
