School board reckoning?

So glad to hear i now live in the NASCR contingency of the country.

I travel all over the country and am amazed people are not familiar with Fairfax county. It has 1.1 million population and is certainly one of the highest mean incomes couties in the country. And solidly blue. Maher's comment is like confusing Chicago with down-state Illinois.

You can call me names, be patronizing, etc, I still do not agree with you PPs. And yes, I am paying attention. I will vote for SB who are focused on academics in 2023. But this? Sticking it to the Dems when there is so much more at stake? Nah.

Democrats alone run the fcps school board, the lcps school board, the aps school board, the fcc school board, the arps school hoard and the Virginia Departmemt of Ed and have for many years.

So yes, without exception, the democratic party owns all of the school issues in northern Virginia.

And none of that changed by electing Youngkin.

Congrats on accomplishing nothing.

Virginia Department of Ed will change almost immediately after his inauguration.

He is going to be firing the current appointees and replacing them with professionals who value education, rigor and excellence over indoctrination, low standards and racism.

Just think, once Youngkin gets his policies in place, our teachers can return to using their planning days on things like literacy and math skills, instead of spending all their training hours on Ibrahim X and white privilege.

Please show me where in the SOLs there is direction to teach about Ibrahim X and white privilege? Remember, we criticize teachers for teaching to the test remember — that was the last popular parent agitation, anyway. So it should be easy for you to cite precisely where in the SOLs the CRT stuff is taught.

DP. Since people are usually reacting to what's provided in administrator and teacher training, including the PP you responded to, it makes more sense to go look at the teacher training materials. You're being purposefully disingenous to say you have to find it in the SOLs. FWIW I am a huge fan of the proposed changes to the social studies SOL and the way they round out VA's history teaching to include more important figures - I wish they'd gone further, in fact. However I'm not a huge fan of DiAngelo or Kendi.

For example this website from the VDOE Education Equity group directly quotes Kendi 3x:

Here is the real thing. People are angry about the curriculum.
They are angry their kids didn't go to school last year.
End stop.
If you can't handle your emotions, how do you expect your kid to?

Voting against the party that ruined out kids by prioritizing unions, and who are working overtime to indoctrinate school chiodren into compliant little leftists is a very productive and positive way for rational citizens to handle their emotions.

I believe that South Lakes show how an infusion of stronger students can improver and bolster a school. Test scores and graduations rates have been improving more then number of kids added by the boundary change rates.

Yes, it will negatively effect some property rates while improving others. And yes, there will be some inconvenience for families. But you can’t allow over crowded schools to continue to be over crowded and under utilized schools to shrink. Arguing that some kids deserve to have over crowded schools so your house maintains its property value is selfish bullshit and you know it.

Source for that?

Reminder: there have been some grading policy changes since the redistricting, as well.

That’s what’s so frustrating. History curriculum can be expanded and improved to include more of the American story.

This stuff is destructive.

Someone sounds like an extremist and it’s not the leftists lady…

This is a concern across the country and I’m pretty sure school systems have to show how they will address achievement gaps. So what do you suggest FCPS do? I agree we shouldn’t lower standards. But the topic/problem isn’t going away.

If 2022 and 2024 go the same way the 2021 elections did, the topic is going away.

Just because you want it to go away, doesn’t mean it will. Equity in education has been an issue forever, even under Republican presidents. The GOP is just going to do away with federal law? You can’t be this dense.

We used to call it equality - equal opportunity. Not equity - equal outcomes. Making sure all kids learn how to read is not the same thing as insisting the reading test be set so that every racial and ethnic background get the same scores. I'd argue that the former is far superior to the latter, but places like Oregon have demonstrated that some people are giving up on the first in favor of the second.

But if you believe racism is baked into everything such as, testing, teachers not encouraging students of color to take more difficult classes, counselors counseling students of color out of honors or AP classes, etc how do you remedy that other than to do what they're doing?

They should just fire all the white people and then encourage the public not to vote for anyone white. Hold to their beliefs.

Anonymous wrote:Yes f the lower income kids, why should they get the same good quality education as us especially at Langley.

No more bussing and no more equity, why should I have to work myself half to death to get them up to grade level. It’s just too much, it’s insane, I’m not god, I cannot create miracles okrrr

Why hasn’t the majority Democrats and now 100% Democrat school board fixed the problem of racist classist principals and teachers who refuse to provide a good education if the schools aren’t mostly white/white adjacent?

Of all these voters claiming schools don’t take into account parent views, how many have availed themselves of one of the many ways FCPS tries to involve parents (other than giving a 2 minute rant at public comment in the hopes of going viral)? Right now, they’ve been asking for parents to review curriculum resources. They’ve had similar reviews of materials within the year. I bet very few of you have done that. Have you served on a school board advisory committee? Played an active role in the PTA or countywide PTAs like the special education one? There’s so many ways to be involved but it takes some effort and might not make you famous.

Liar. No one in FCPS is “promoting” anything like that.

I vote for people who can do it for me - so I don't have to do it all myself. That's how I try to outsource.

Well, McAuliffe seemed to think there were far too many white teachers.

Remember his plan to pay for tuition and room and board for HBCU colleges if there would be a commitment to teach 5 years?
He said that 50% of Virginia students are of color--but I didn't see him offering to pay room, board, and tuition for Asian kids.
