I think it is pretty much a given that Oak Hill Elem will move. Option A is the logical solution. It solves problems.

I hope Oak Hill ES does get zoned to the new school. That would be our neighborhood school, and I'd be thrilled if my younger kids could go to the new school instead of Chantilly.

What’s wrong with Chantilly? We are zoned for Oakton and I wish mine could go to Chantilly instead!

We love Chantilly. Would be happy staying there, but one proposal split neighborhood to go to Oakton. Drive to Oakton is way too far and would split our neighborhood. Can you imagine driving back roads in this weather? Chantilly is overcrowded. Westfield is overcrowded and so is Oakton now.

Yeah this is why we'd rather go to Chantilly. My kid actually wants to go to the new school, but our community has been vocally opposing it so they probably won't get to go unless there is room for transfers or unless they extend the opt in to multiple years.

Be vocal!! I talk to a lot of Crossfield parents and most of them want to go to the new school but for some reason are too scared of the PTO to create their own organization and do their own lobbying. Why is that?

Lack of motivation, organization and not nearly enough interest.

This sounds like a RIO ringleader patting themselves on the back for being oh so organized. Typical superiority complex.

You know those girls in high school who no one liked but they seemingly had a lot of friends because people were afraid to get on their bad side? It's like that. You can say all you want that people should get over that, but human social dynamics are what they are.

None of this would matter if the School Board members and Reid had brains and a spine.

Yes, the school board and superintendent should only listen to Crossfield parents who want their kids to attend Western not Fox Mill families or anyone else.

Don't be an idiot. They've bought a new school to relieve overcrowding and reduce commuting distances. Prioritize the considerations that were used to justify the purchase and redistrict as needed.

They are so uncertain of their ability to do the obvious things correctly that they just allow themselves to be swayed by the loudest voices. If they are that cowardly, they should just put KAA back on the market and sell it to someone who wants the land for data centers.

I’m glad you can participate in a discussion without resorting to name calling, you’re a great role model. Name one instance in the boundary review where an es was moved to a new hs due to distance. If you were so concerned about your commute why didn’t you bring this up during the boundary review and advocate to be moved to South Lakes? The school board members are elected officials and should listen to every argument presented to them during their deliberation and then make their decision. That does not make them cowardly simply politicians. You should take your anger and direct it towards speaking up at a meeting.

In the last boundary review? Wolftrap.

Do you really think they should or will ignore existing commuting distances and distances to Western when they create boundaries? For the most part they won’t. You’re just hoping they will where Crossfield is concerned.

Wolftrap is your example…that community advocated to attend Madison over Marshall, because they wanted to be there it had nothing to do with distance. You’re right I hope Crossfield doesn’t get rezoned to Western but not because of why you think.

The argument that it reduced commuting time and eliminated a split feeder was key to the Wolftrap decision.

You argue for a ridiculous approach where every decision is based on who has the most resources to yell the loudest. That’s absurd, and an abdication of board members’ fiduciary duties, whether it’s coming from Crossfield parents pushing to stay at Oakton, Fox Mill parents looking to keep Crossfield out of the discussion so they instead can move to Western from South Lakes, or others.

You might want to check the most recent entries in the boundary review thread to see if DCUM agrees with you on the merits of Wolftrap's move...

Does anyone know any rising sophomores opting in?
Our base school is not great, but I don’t know any sophomores opting in to Western. They just don’t seem interested about attending a school with limited clases and activities and having to go to the base school for sports.
And the fewer that opt in, the fewer others want to follow.
I wish they had just settled the boundaries and made everyone go.

Yes, I know a bunch are from SLHS. I have neighbors whose kids will be moving and they told me that many of their kids friends opted in. Honestly, I know rising Juniors who are annoyed that they don't have the choice.

I would be surprised if they get 500 sophomores but they will have a decent number.

I don't think that the choice to move is available right now but who knows, that might change based on the numbers. I think you needed to opt in during the opt in period, which is now passed.

It's super low effort to do a change.org petition, but if you can't even do that. There's no way you're going to get the outcome you want.

If the new school is as popular as you say hundreds will sign it. Put your money where your mouth is bro.

I don't understand people who sign a change.org petition. Those don't do anything, nobody looks at them, the names could be fake for all I know.

We know several former Crossfield families who have opted in for 9th, and only one who opted in for 10th.

She wants Crossfield to go to Western. She may get that outcome. If so, the reason will be because of bussing, and not because anyone believes that most of Crossfield wants to move. Agreed that a petition would be easy if most of Crossfield cared, whether it's change.org or another option.

Western notices went out today. My kid will be there. All of friends are in as well. It says that they almost hit their target but doesn’t say if that is for 9th and 10th grade or just one grade.

"Wrapping up" as if they aren't starting over on Western's boundaries...

I'm happy your child is satisfied with the option they received. Sadly, kids elsewhere in the county are being involuntarily redistricted, with families told there's "no money" for their schools and boundary changes are the only option, even though the School Board was able to find $200 million it hadn't expected to spend for years to pay for the new western HS.

Maybe at some point they'll take their commitment to equity seriously.
