Some friends this girl had. Even if she hooked up with the guy, when she didn't show up for the excursion after she venmo'd for it, how could they just go about their day until 4pm.

And this guy with the hero syndrome most likely did something to her.

And the parents knowing she's dead probably just don't want her name dragged through the mud by the Indian circle in Ashburn and Aldie and want her declared dead. They must be looking out for their other children.

It's sad that this girl won't get justice.

Hopefully she will get justice if a crime was committed.

Here’s an article re: the death declaration. It’s not a thing in DR without evidence of crime or a body. It’s pretty unprecedented even in US less than 2 weeks into an investigation. I hope the parents were united re this.

It was for religious (Hindu) reasons due to the the 13 days of mourning period.

That is an assumption that now people are spouting as fact.

It's the most likely scenario. That and that the victim drown.

Others have said not part of being Hindu.

I think parents wanted to try to shut down videos being played and discussion.

Very unusual request and timing. Has only sparked more discussion.

google says it's part of Hindu ritual at day 13.

For whatever reasons, her parents made a decision. If DR and whomever wants to continue let them do whatever they do in DR. Best if all left the families alone, they have been through enough as it is.

DR does not even have a provision for this in law. In US typically after 7 years.

Not required by their religion.

Parents have only added to the spectacle.

I am not sure her mom was on same page. The way her husband tried to force her body to turn back to face the camera was uncomfortable.

DP. He was not forcing her. He was giving support to his shocked and grieving wife and for himself. Can you imagine having to say the words he read from that paper?

Patting her was support. Grabbing her shoulder with his fingers and trying to physically force her to turn back and face the cameras was uncomfortable. She continued to resist until he let go.

The father chose to read the statement publicly and to make the request she be declared dead. The parents may not be in 100% agreement. There is not even a provision for such a declaration in DR or even US law after 11 days. Leaving the DR after 3 days, after the video was released, was also odd. Usually 1 family member, at least, would stay to be part of the search.

His family should stop this nonsense statement then making a statement dance if they want to be left alone. Better to speak with a therapist or clergy or something.

Your post is disingenuous and rage bait. I read the article. It says the dailynews (the UK tabloid) called the parents and the mother answered the phone. She declined a full interview but she did confirm he got back home on Saturday and that their family still sends their condolences to the woman’s family. She refused to answer whether Riibe was returning to school.

So this family didn’t just issue some PR statement. I doubt they even have a publicist. So stop smearing them. They come across to me as just simple people from Iowa, and that’s not against the law to be a person like that. So stop making stuff up about them.

Another NY post link. Wasn't it decided by smart posters on this thread that NYpost wasn't? Or was that another NY site?

Well, you should read the 208 pages. Nothing you have said hasn't been said already and discussed.

Her parents’ action is not even based in law and it’s an extremely unusual action, esp less than 2 weeks after she went missing. They have created an additional spectacle.

I’m not sure both parents are in agreement re this timing.

My guess is that they have been pressured in some way using their citizenship/residency status as leverage. They have two younger kids at home whose lives have already been turn upside down by what has happened to their sister. Being deported from the only place those kids know of as home would cause additional trauma.

Pure speculation, but that was the feeling I got watching their news statement.

Loudoun County's Chapman needs to be called out. If he was the only law enforcement source to use the term "Person of Interest" in describing the young man, he made a terrific mistake as he well knows. As if it weren't enough that he inserted himself uselessly into an affair completely outside of his jurisdiction, he threw gasoline on a tragedy and turned it into a global Armageddon.

He ruined a young man's life.

If he had any decency, he would now broadcast loudly the facts to exonerate this young man's good name. He would not stop until the media circus understands in no uncertain terms this was a tragedy for all the young people involved.

Lol that doesn't make sense. Regardless of the dead college student he would've deported if found in violation. No one is going to say stop talking about it unless you want to get deported.

Didn't sense that from probably the same press coverage you watched. It looked like parents in incredible shocking grief and the thought of those words being read were unbearable for one of them to hear. The other one - the father- finished despite his body language also clearly in pain. They may have been advised by an attorney to make such a declaration. Everything is speculation but what if there was pressure from the families of their daughter's traveling companions? To stop unwanted spotlight on the students. Those young women also must be grieving.

There is no provision in DR law for such a declaration without a body, in this time frame. There is no provision in US law either, where the typical statute requires 7 years. It was an extraordinary and legally baseless action. A special law would have to be passed in DR.

What in the fresh hell is this drivel?

Beneath a predawn sky, adorned with shimmering stars and clouds lazily floating past the moon, Sudiksha Konanki stepped into the warm, inviting waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Far from the pounding thrum of party music and the clamor of tipsy conversations, Konanki and Joshua Steven Riibe waded waist-deep into the water and shared a kiss, based on an account of the events Riibe relayed to investigators.

In the sky, the moon is carved sharply, half-lit and half-shadowed, a silent witness to the night unfolding below.

The sun, a brilliant blaze of red and orange, set on another night in Punta Cana.

Down the pathway where Riibe and Konanki had walked arm-in-arm is the same beach, dark and still as ever, with no sound except for the hushing of the ocean, her mighty waves lap at the shore.

The moon, now a brighter waning gibbous, still perches quietly.

18:11 what's the point of your post? So a vomit kiss was shared according to the young man. Don't have the other party's story. Go find something new to write about.

You think CNN could spend a little time writing about the end of democracy or something. Not an article for Teen Vogue.
