She’ll need at least a 3.8, actually.

Did you miss the "+"?

3.8-plus, unless you’re aiming for some loser medical school. William and Mary weeds out med school wannabes very quickly.

No accredited U.S. medical school is a "loser" school. Admissions to medical school in the U.S. is extremely difficult due to the controlled number of spots.

The average GPA there is above a 3.3; same as most other schools of the same caliber.

I find the title of this thread odd. We had a kid go to William & Mary and one to an Ivy and they both had great experiences and have done equally well. The country would be better off if there were more public schools like William & Mary.

My senior has narrowed down his colleges to W&M and VT. He is leaning toward W&M because of the size and has heard great things about the Business School. He has heard there is not much school spirit and that campus life is boring compared to other colleges. Would love to get some input.

DC is a senior in the business school. Has been very helpful & has a great job. Chose over UVA b/c maybe wouldn’t have gotten in B school at UVA. Then what ?

W&M reminds me again just how lucky those in Virginia are to have multiple state universities that are not only very good, but also quite distinctive.

My DS is a sophomore at W&M. My DS wanted a smaller school and didn't want a frat/party culture. Ironically, he joined a fraternity and was living in the fraternity house this year and is planning on living there next year. He spent a weekend at UVA last semester visiting some of his friends from high school and he said the party atmosphere there made him uncomfortable.

The way he describes his social life is he does something social almost every Friday and Saturday night. He goes to some "dry" social events on the weekends and some where alcohol is served. He does have friends that drink to excess, but he said there is no pressure and the drinking just happens on the weekend. During the week, the students are serious about studying. He is very involved with a club sport and attends their practices weekly. They have social and service events that he also participates in. His fraternity plays alot of intramural sports - both coed and just males.

My DS loves watching sports and he and his friends go to every home football and basketball game. He wishes the teams were better and more students attended the games.

W&M has several all campus traditions - the convocation at the beginning of school year. Homecoming is a big deal. The Yule Log ceremony right before the winter break. Charter Day. These events all attract a large number of students so there is school spirit.

I think the key is to get involved and find your Tribe.

My DC seems to party enough at W&M to be bombing classes...I was hoping the myths of it being boring were more true.

Adding: though the stay-at-home order is curtailing that now.

My girlfriends daughter graduated from W&M. The drinking culture was pretty heavy.

This is true at all schools - no matter what some parents claim. Any school will have parties.

There will be some serious and problem drinking at almost all schools. The issue is if they can have a good social life without it.
