That's funny, because such a school doesn't exist in the DC area around college admissions time. Get back to us junior year, when people at your Shangri-La school start freaking out when they find out their kids' best college options are Towson State and University of West Virginia. |
Of course, it is true. We have been given tons of money to the school, we deserve outstanding service. |
Still can’t tell |
Yeah -- nobody would put it exactly that way in conversation . . . but it's definitely implied. |
So then do you believe the flip side: kids who go to public school don't deserve to get into their first choice schools? Is the money all that matters? |
DP. Everyone deserves a fair chance but let’s be honest, it is much more difficult to get good grades at schools like Sidwell, STA, and NCS then it is the public schools. We have friends in all of the schools and the public school kids are not doing 3 hours per night of work and the level and intensity is much more difficult at top privates. |
Responding to dp about less work at public schools: what exactly are you suggesting though? I can see the argument that an A at, say, a big 3 school, is harder to come by than an A at many publics. But many kids at public can earn the same (or better) scores on sat, act, etc perhaps with fewer study hours. . They can become national merit finalists. They can Max out sat ii scores. Are you saying those kids are less deserving of college placement or college counseling because their A's came more easily? Or because they didn't study quite as many hours (and that doesn't say they lack a work ethic; that's not the issue).
I'm not trying to be belligerent; I'm legitimately not understanding exactly what your view is. I agree that so much of what you pay for in private is good counseling--the lack of which often disadvantages public school kids with otherwise stellar scores. Is your point simply that since private costs so much, that counseling ought to be a key/the key service? That it should differentiate kids from private with the same scores as those from public? Again, just trying to understand your pov. |
I'm not PP but you're referring to the subset of academic superstars who would've gotten As whether they were in public or private. I'm guessing that the beef is with those in private schools who get As due to grade inflation/low standards/whatever but would likely struggle with the increased rigor at certain top private schools. |
It's great that the talent will be renewed in the College Counseling Office, but Sidwell Friends also needs to expand the office's resources. 45 seniors is too many for one counselor to advise, particularly if one of them also has director duties. Sidwell needs to expand the number of counselors from three to four, and ideally to five, as well as increase outreach earlier in the year to the junior class. The college admissions process has changed a lot in five years, and Sidwell needs to step up and adapt. I hope that outgoing senior parents and rising junior parents take the opportunity
to remind the administration that more resources are needed. |
+1,000 The admissions environment has changed --CCO resources need to be increased |
I suspect that post was about St. Andrew’s. It’s a phenomenal program and I have to believe if it were located 10 miles south (in the district) it would be in far greater demand...I have not heard any significant criticism of the school, even on DCUM - impressive! |
Well the answer is in todays Washington's Post.... Crazy, rude and unethical parents is the reason College Director at Sidwell is leaving. He had the balls in December to call parents out on their behavior in a email. He is more competent and ethical than entitled spoiled parents. Told by Parent clerk on Monday that over 30 admits to Ivys this year. They offered to increase his pay by 25%to stay but he isn't about money- because he comes from real family money.

Once again - real brass balls in a town of castrated parents catering to their precious snowflakes. Sidwell Parents finally met a College Counselor with ethics, soul and a conscious.....and he called them out on their behavior. |

Never mind, I read "prestige whore, lip service to Quaker values and Sidwell" in the same sentence somewhere. |
He’s leaving because he was asked to leave, along with his incompetent underling. |
