Private & Independent Schools
| This was the first Kairos incident. The stands could not hold the weight of the students. Ever see a crowd jump a fence at the end of a championship game in the last 100 years? This is the Hate I was talking about. I am an 80"s grad and my sons are not entitled a-holes. I know so many of the kids there and they are wonderful. |
Earlier in the comments on this post, someone referenced baseball... |
Inasmuch as this was second hand I’m not going to put that out here. |
Gonzaga parent here. Heard it was a combo of boys from the lacrosse and baseball teams. Star players involved w/elite college aspirations so doubt expulsions will be the punishment (though it should be). |
NP. You are entitled to your opinion, just as others are to theirs, and mine is that you are going to hate the school no matter what and that it is completely ridiculous to judge the school and all GZ students and graduates based on the bad decisions of the few who make the news here or elsewhere. About a year ago when the Washington Post Magazine published a fabulous article that reflected very well on the school regarding all the service opportunities that so many GZ students participate in, there were maybe 5 DCUM posts acknowledging the article. But here we are now on page 21 or 22 because so many who don't even know the school well would rather accuse an entire school and all of its graduates of "a long history of boorish and frankly violent behavior." |
Not surprised to hear about lacrosse team involvement. Also if team leaders were involved...easy to see how they could get 30-40 boys to follow them for an adventure on private property. I doubt they pre-planned the destruction but it started once they got there when a few alphas went over the top and the other boys followed. |
Off by a year and a few posts but here is the thread. A total of one page of comments by DCUM posters. So much more fun to bash than congratulate, I guess. https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/633504.page#10697339 |
| Reading comprehension is a good thing. Saying that the school has a history is not the same as accusing all graduates. |
That's a technicality that gets lost in the broader fact that you are stereotyping when you say "the school". |
| How is saying "the school" stereotyping? Aren't the subset of student perpetrators part of the institution? |
My son participates in one of the sports mentioned here and says that only a few boys participated. At first, the team rallied around their teammates but once the truth of the scale of destruction became known the younger boys including my S were horrified. We hope the admin does the right thing and expels the few responsible and certainly punish the bystanders who didn't report what they witnessed. Gonzaga is getting a black eye from this episode and maybe deservedly so but the vast majority of students are great kids who unfortunately will be tainted by the actions of a few. |
Your use of the word "maybe" implies that the school might not deserve any bad consequences from this episode. Why not? If the school shouldn't get blamed when some of its students do bad things, it also shouldn't get any credit when some of its students accomplish great things. It goes both ways. |
First, not a Gonzaga hater, and I don't think that this vandalism means that all kids or the school is bad. But the Washington Post cited 40-50 students involved in the vandalism. Is that inaccurate? |
As a Gonzaga parent you don’t know the truth. Please stop spreading rumors. If you are a current parent please just stop. |
My best information would suggest it is partially inaccurate and maybe a little misleading in that a smaller portion of that were actually involved, while the 40-50 number is probably an estimate that also includes those who were on the retreat and didn't report. |
