And earlier on, pp assuming the property owners wanted to “cover up” the incident. There’s zero evidence the property owners did anything wrong. |
Gonzaga mom here. We heard there were about 10 or so kids who engaged in the destruction and others (30 or so) either watched or left the location once the destruction started. All who were there, from what we understand, got some sort of punishment (not suspension or expulsion). But there were not 30-40 boys actually engaging in the destruction. I am very aware that could have been my mild mannered, gentle kid in the group that stood by (thankful he was not). I cannot imagine that the bystanders would be able to effectively stop the destruction, but I do hope they at least made an effort. I am sad for the families of the kids who were at the wrong place at the wrong time. As for the handful of kids who did the destruction, all should be expelled. The others who stood by or left and did not inform chaperones should have some sort of suspension. Hoping Fr. Planning will do the right thing, although I believe it is too late for me to ever respect him as a leader again. |
+1 from a mom whose son just graduated from GZ and was a Kairos leader. He has heard the same and is devastated. Boys have been expelled for much less. |

^^^Thank you for this-it gives the court of public opinion more perspective on the matter.
Curious to know the average Gonzaga parent’s thoughts on the matter and what should be done. Your approach sounds reasonable and hopefully the school admin is reading these types of opinions and will act accordingly. |
The Heights? |
Spot on. My son graduated last year, and his reaction to this situation was one of profound anger with the students engaged in the destruction, who he heard were concentrated in a particular sport. The fact that such anger has been the relatively uniform reaction of the alums and current students belies the various posters who have spouted off about the "horrors" of all-male education generally and GNZ's brand of it specifically. As for Fr. Planning, he's a good priest, but like many Jesuits, the guy's always been an operator and always will be. Unfortunately, he will take into account what side his bread is buttered on, and who is doing the buttering, in dealing with this. But he will cite core values of redemption in doing so. |
| What was the sport the boys were concentrated in? |

Thank you. Our son is a rising freshman and GZ is one of 3 schools to which he applied. Not presuming he's accepted, but truly to help us in our decision matrix, are you able to share which sport/team was represented in the group of vandals? Is there someplace we can find out the "cultures" of the different sports teams? Please don't beat me up over this question. Thanks.

| Many of these posts are full of hate. Unfortunately, this is the sign of the times. I am a Gonzaga parent and alumni. This is an isolated incident as Kairos has been going on for years and years and no one was prepared for the poor judgment of a Few. The teen leaders were not prepared to stop this nor would their peers listen yet they are also punished. You have no say on whether the punishments are just as this is a private matter. I do know that this matter is far from over. |
Me too - son waiting on decision and wondering what sport... |
How is this isolated? They destroy the stands at games and they post porn on social media. That is just the top issues this year and last. The kids refuse to shake hands at the end of some games when they lose. Their behavior on the field is appalling. My family has been a part of GZ for a century and in the last 15 years the boys are entitled a-holes and the dads are wasted at football games. The 80's grads are a mess. Things need to be locked down and reeled in big time. This is not isolated. |

If you are the least bit intelligent, look at Gonzaga's great history and what it has done not only in the past but currently.
There was a mix of students who play sports at Kairos, but that is not represented in the values and cultures of any of the sports there. |
| As soon as I heard there were no suspensions I assumed the kids were involved in a sport. |
You’re utterly delusional if you think this is an isolated event. Gonzaga students have a long history of boorish and frankly violent behavior. |
